Augusta, Georgia
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
71F / 22C
Overcast
Total Time = 5h 06m 2s
Overall Rank = 298/2543
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 66/317
Pre-race routine:

Stayed 20 minutes away in Grovetown as we waitied too long to book a hotel downtown. It was fine and cheap. Up at 3:30, out the door an hour later, parked at the Marriott by 4:45 and on the first shuttle to transition.
Swim
  • 30m 10s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Transition 1
  • 03m 57s
Comments:

Wetsuit stippers were awesome. Amazing how many people killed themselves to get to the swim finish then walked . Three words - on your left!
Bike
  • 2h 43m 22s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.57 mile/hr
Comments:

There are two longish but not steep hills to grind up and sections of road that stink. Overall it's a really nice bike course and there are three bottle swaps. I rode it a month ago so I knew what I was in store for.
What would you do differently?:

Train to get my race pace up a mile per hour without killing myself.
Transition 2
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

Felt pretty fast and I tend to lag in these things.
Run
  • 1h 45m 19s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

I was told more than once not to go bananas on the first loop. I learned that lesson when I previewed the course over the summer..in 95 degree heat..with no fuel. Weather cooperated on race day which helped out a ton.
What would you do differently?:

Now that I know I can run of the bike (weather permitting) and not kill myself, work on getting a little deeper in the cave o pain.
Post race
Warm down:

Massage, beer, pizza, more beer, more pizza.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience

Event comments:

This race lived up to its billing - very awesome for a first timer.

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
