Sunny
Total Time = 6h 09m 29s
Overall Rank = 74/217
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 9/32
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 5:00am. Ate a banana and yogurt. Grabbed my swimming gear and bike bottles and drove 10 minutes away to catch a shuttle bus to T1. Clipped bike shoes on my bike. Waited in porta line before the race. Dipped in the water to wet my wetsuit.
Swim
  • 40m 47s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim was pretty straight forward. Had a pretty good draft for a short portion of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Go a little harder on the swim. Maybe.
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

The transition went well. Just have to make sure to stuff everything in the transition bag before leaving.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Bike
  • 3h 20m 59s
  • 58 miles
  • 17.31 mile/hr
Comments:

Windy and hilly was the name of the game. Downhill was challenging with some 25mph gust cross-winds. I had to get off the aero position on a section of the downhill to ride straight. I'm not sure if it was even possible to stay balanced in aero position at some points on the course

Saw race marshall's motorcycle going around the course at least 4 times. Only time I get stuck behind someone, (I know I had close to 3 bike lengths behind) I saw the marshall stick around and give me time penalty. It sucks since I wasn't even drafting or trying to at that time.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure
Transition 2
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Went pretty smoothly. Did everything I wanted to do.
What would you do differently?:

Look into speed laces, but I doubt I would like that with anything like half marathon.
Run
  • 1h 59m 55s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot. Thank goodness for the cold towels they were giving out on the course! I took extra time to make sure I was hydrated at the aid station. It might be smart to carry a small water bottle to supplement the aid station.

Carried 2 Cliff gels for the run. Used one 30 minutes in and another at 1:15 in.
What would you do differently?:

Leave some energy for the run course. Or not.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and got 2 slices of pizza and after plenty of water and some stretching, got a nice craft beer. Watched the finishers come in as I cooled down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Might have went too hard on bike.

Event comments:

If you want challenging half iron distance race, this is it. This event will only grow bigger from here on. Great swim, tough bike course, and a pretty trail to run down to downtown. You really can't get any better than this!

If you are a person who feels safer on the trails rather than the road, but you still want to race, this article will help you better train.

A Walmart bike, a borrowed road bike or a new carbon fiber bike? You don't need to break the bank for your first triathlon bike.

I read somewhere about "bar ends" to put on your handle bars, do you recommend them? Is this similar to adding clip on aero bars?

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.

Well I said that I was not going to do it this season, but I cracked. I broke down and bought a new bike. I went out and bought a shiny new Cannondale road bike.

So after about 10,000 emails, dozens of phone calls, and one pre-race pasta dinner, the 1st meeting of the Steve's in a triathlon finally arrived.
