Sunny
Total Time = 2h 41m 54s
Overall Rank = 96/357
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 10/26
Pre-race routine:

Planned to spend weekend in Williamsburg. Worked 28 hours Thursday into Friday and after we left NC didn't get to Williamsburg until 8 or 9. Stopped at DOG street and filled a growler with Aleworks ESB, and then to the hotel which was about 6 miles from the race just off the VA Capital bike trail. Packet pickup Saturday but kept bike and paid extra $$ to check it in on Sunday. Busch Gardens with the Family on Saturday and dinner with Friends. Park wasn't to crowded. Maybe everyone was at Water country. Parenting win. To bed to late. But hey its a Racecation. Shakeology for breakfast
Event warmup:

biked 6 miles to race. Setup transition and had a cliff bar.
Swim
  • 26m 7s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

Walked into water a little before start and cut my big toe on some unseen hazard. For the start I stayed on the ramp and didn't bother going out deeper. I think many started from treading water. I gave them a head start and went from a wade

Sighting markers after the first and second turn were a little hard to see, could have had more.
What would you do differently?:

Second time I've cut my foot warming up in brackish water. Probably skip warm-up next time unless in a full time swimming area. No signs of infection!
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

Passed some folks by running up the ramp and into t1. Put Tri top on in T1. Mount line got a bit crowed. Seemed like some people weren't sure how to get on their bikes, ran thru and mounted in front of them
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 17m 50s
  • 27.2 miles
  • 20.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Had planned to keep pace around 18.5 but felt good and went with it. Goal was to get 2 bottles in during the bike. I only got 1.5. Wish I was able to get 2 in as I felt dehydrated during the run.

Took a gel around mile 15
What would you do differently?:

Drink more on bike
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Best dismount yet. Had trouble finding my rack as they moved the trash cans that I was using as my marker in the aisle
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 53m 57s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out okay. Bib tore and I had to fix it First mile in the sun with a bridge hill. Felt good and carried thru mile 2 which was in the shade. Mile 3 was back in the sun and started to overheat a little and was behind on water and lytes. Made up for it by walking and drinking in next several aid stations, and was able to run a bit faster.
Then got bloated but didn't feel like it affected me much.
What would you do differently?:

More water on the bike
Post race
Warm down:

Cold towel, water, Gatorade, and walked around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Might have been able to run a little faster if cooler or If my hydration was better

Event comments:

This race had so many personal touches. Definitely want to do this race again

Age Group: 13/26
Overall: 133/357
Performance: Good
Suit: Tri shorts
Course: Point to point. Started at boat ramp in Morris creek and swam into the Chickahominy River. Was timed to be with the outgoing tide. I think we caught it at low tide as the water depth for the last 200-300 meters was only a couple feet and most swimmers hands were dragging across the silt on the bottom. This was deep silt. I swung out a bit to get in deeper water but didn't notice much difference.
