Pre-race routine:

First race of the fall USATF SoCal Cross Country Grand Prix Series with my club team, New Basin Blues. Third year racing this meet--Open Division race in what is otherwise a huge HS invitational (15 different HS boys/girls divisional races go on all day after the Open race first thing in the AM).

Event warmup:

Had to park unusually far from the start, so I counted the walk as most of my warmup. Jogged about a 1/4 mile on the course 15 minutes before the start and did one strider right before the gun.

Comments:

PR for the course by over a minute (although last year we were sent the wrong way by a volunteer, so everyone ran about 0.8 mile longer than we should have). First time under 20 minutes and under 7:00/mile. Surprisingly, I was one of the 5 scoring runners of the 7 on my club's mens team...didn't expect to score...beat some guys (and women) I don't normally beat on this course.
What would you do differently?:

Very apprehensive about running this full out and risking hamstring or quad injury with the big downhills and with my 50 miler just a week away. Ultimately, I felt good and got off to a great start, so I went for it. Wore compression socks and my Skechers Ultras for some protection...probably was a good idea. Given lack of speed work in the first half of the year due to hammie issues, this was better than I expected, honestly. The USATF series attracts a ton of very fast runners, especially at the "Grandmaster" level (my age category, i.e., 50+), so I'm always mid-pack at best in these meets.
Post race
Warm down:

Very short jog and a little bit of walking and stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Apparently nothing much...

Event comments:

Venerable (and huge) HS cross country invitational. Meet starts with an all-comers "Open Division" race. Very challenging 2.9 mile course to try to race full out.
