Pre-race routine:

Registered for 10K distance with fellow staff and volunteers from my side job with a rabbit shelter. Proceeded to suffer a stress injury to right 2nd metatarsal. Had 7 weeks of recovery but didn't determine I could run until after test 2.5 mile tempo run 36 hours beforehand. Didn't decide to drop down to 5K (more due to lack of fitness than risk of reinjury at this point) until I got to the race and checked in.

Event warmup:

Light rain off and on. So agonized not only about footwear to protect stress injury (and tweaked left ankle), but also clothing. Got in a quality 0.5 mile warmup run and light stretching.

Comments:

Surprisingly uneventful given injury layoff, lack of conditioning, and wet pavement. Pain-free (although my right foot neuroma acted up starting around mile 2). 5K and 10K started together, so I wasn't sure where I was in the standings...knew I was no worse than 12th...then the two guys just ahead of me went out on the second loop of the 10K as I finished, so I knew I was no worse than top 10 overall. (Turned out there were a couple other 10K runners in the lead group and I was 8th in the 5K.) Hit my "moral victory" goal of beating my 10K PR pace..averaged 6:53 after a not great 7:25/mile tempo run two nights earlier.

There was a guy ahead of me who I suspected might be in my AG...sure enough, he was. Despite finishing 8th of over 500 finishers, I was only 2nd in men 55-59...two guys over 55 in top 8...as always, it's all about who shows up!

What would you do differently?:

Not have a mild stress fracture in my foot 7 weeks before the race? Not go ahead with the Malibu Olympic Tri three weeks after the injury out of sheer stubbornness?
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched a bit, walked a bit, cheered in my rabbit shelter teammates.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury layoff. Didn't run at all for 3 1/2 weeks after gutting it out through Malibu Tri...only did two short runs (0.5 mi treadmill Tuesday and 2.5 miles tempo on the roads Thursday) this week to test injury and fitness. Still not healed quite enough to resume full training.

Event comments:

Big multi-organization race and expo to benefit animal rescues. Kind of in the middle between big event and low budget. Lot of dogs, but race director steers runners with pets to the back of the pack (no pun intended).
