I love the girl in the white t-shirt who is covering her eyes like she's watching a horror movie or something.

GREAT GAME!!!!  What's funny is my wife, who went to LSU her freshman year, was rooting for Iowa.  I knew I married a good one.  Hawkeye, are you from Iowa originally?  What part?  I was born in Atlantic and have a lot of family in Council Bluffs/Omaha.

I grew up in DeWitt, just north of Davenport. Left to go to college in suburban Chicago and haven't lived there since. But, I'm still an AVID Iowa fan.

I was at this game, on the field actually. (I had connections that hooked me up BIG TIME!) It literally took me 3-5 sec. to realize what happened on this last play of the game.

Hawkeye - 2005-01-28 10:57 AM I was at this game, on the field actually. It literally took me 3-5 sec. to realize what happened on this last play of the game.

I watched it on TV and knew immediately what happened on that play. My reaction was pretty much as pictured. In my younger days, I would have thrown a chair through the window.

Thanks for the reminder. As my friend says, even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and then. When exactly was the last time Iowa won a national championship?

;-)

Funny you should ask. Here's some research shared from a fellow Hawkeye:

Iowa did win the Grantland Rice Trophy - for the
national championship - in 1958. The Associated Press
trophy was given to LSU that season, but the AP did
not have a final poll after bowl games (which is why
Minnesota was the national champion in 1960 even
though the Gophers lost the Rose Bowl). LSU won the
Sugar Bowl 7-0, but Iowa won the Rose Bowl 38-17 and
it was widely agreed that the Grantland Rice Trophy -
given after the bowl games - was the real national
championship trophy at that time.

Interestingly enough, we beat out LSU that year, too. ;-) Sure, sure, sure, LSU (supposedly) won the Nat'l Championship last year. But this is a new year. Iowa will be there sooner than you think.

Another interesting factoid about that glorious game: Holloway has exactly 1 TD reception in his 5 year career at Iowa. That's right, you got burned by a bench-warmer.

Kind of cements that blind-pig theory, doesn't it?

Perhaps you could enlighten us as to what the fluke play that we are discussing has to do with the previous years' national championship?

As to the "supposed" comment, LSU won the BCS championship according to the BCS rules agreed upon by the BCS schools. Really have to love people who agree to a set of rules then argue with the outcome.

Which BCS rules would those be? The BCS rules that says that a concensus top 8 team (Cal) would be shut out in place of a lesser team (Texas) who has more political pull?

The BCS is a farce and has only produced an actual champion once since it's inception. Not to mention that the BCS doesn't allow all NCAA teams to participate in it's "playoff" keeping other "non-BCS" conferences out of the running. (Utah)

I will fully admit that LSU was the BCS champion in 2004. But USC is claiming their victory in this year's Orange Bowl as a repeat National Championship. How could that be if LSU was the undesputed champion last year?

As for winning on a fluke play, the whole fourth quarter of that game was full of them. Neither team dominated on offense or defense. LSU put together a couple of great drives in the last period and Iowa stayed in the hunt through superior special team play all game long. Too be honest, I felt bad for the LSU players because of what was going on with Saban and how all of that overshadowed a team that had a decent year and a respectable record in the toughest conference in the nation. No one was tougher than the SEC this year.
