Subject: Bike Tech question - Cassette Change Problem
so, I switched my cassette the other day, no problem, but on my first ride with it last night, it seems that its rubbing slightly on the plastic disc (whatever that thing is called) that is between the cassette and the spokes. When I freewheel, its slightly rotating the cassette forward, causing some slack in the chain, which also caused me to drop the chain twice when shifting down from the big to small ring on the front.

So, did I do something wrong? Don't really know what I could have done differently, just pulled the old one off and put the new one on. Both are Dura-ace 10speed cassettes. Only difference is the old one was 12-25 and the new one is 12-27.

I kind of figured whatever was rubbing would wear in quickly, but also gave some thought to just removing the plastic disc. (what is that thing called?). I assume its to stop the chain from jumping off the top of the cassette into the spokes, but do I really need it?

Thanks,

FishHog

You can certainly get rid of the plastic plate spoke protector. It's a government induced safety "feature" to protect us from nothing.

What concerns me is your freewheel observation. Did you tke the freehub off or apart? I'm assuming Shimano hubs since you don't specify. If you did take it apart, you might have over-torqued it and now it's binding up. Or, doubtful and highly coincidental, the freehub is binding up and not releasing and is worn out. I guess it's possible that iof the cassette binds up on that plasic plate, you could be advancing the drivetrain and engaging the "pawls" in the freehub.

Ditch the plate, try again and see how you do. FWIW: Wipe, then lightly coat the freehub body w/ some grease (Phil Woods is my favorite) before installing so corrosion is kept at bay.

Nope, didn't touch the freewheel.
I'll ditch the "spoke protector", I can actually see that its rubbing on the back of the cassette. Its slight, but at higher speeds its advancing the cassette slightly. I can't really back pedal for the same reason.

I'm pretty sure ditching the protector will solve the issue, just wanted to make sure it was OK to ditch it.

While you're at it, de-Fred your bike and ditch the reflectors as well.

It's a government thing, just a device to protect your spokes should you overshift into them.

Reflectors and fork tabs aren't even "government induced" ( I don't think), but rather bike manufacturers protecting themselves from litigation.

Could you possibly have left out the small spacer that goes between the hub body and the last cog? The last time I took my cassette off to give it a thorough cleaning the thin metal spacer ring that goes on before the large cog cluster must have slipped off the hub. When I re-assembled the cassette it was binding when I back pedaled. Found the missing spacer under a rag, put everything back together and it was fine. Look for it when you take the cassette off to remove the pie plate. It could even be stuck to the back side of your old cassette if there is some grease or grime back there. I believe all Shimano 10 speed cassettes take a spacer on 8/9/10 speed hubs.

Hey thanks, that was in fact the problem. Actually my old cassette didn't require the spacer, so I didn't think about using the one provided with the new one. It however did need it.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm going shopping for some sparkly streamers.
