I had a bike crash 8/17, traumatized my shoulder. Tried to train through the pain and even did a 1/2 marathon on 8/31. But my swim training has plummeted. Friday I had an MRI which showed a separation and partial tears in my ligaments and labrum. Today I saw the orthopedist who told me my season was over due to the chance of exacerbating the injury on the swim.

And I had the Nations Tri and the Wilmington Tri scheduled for the next two weekends.

And I lost a fortune in the stock market today.

Waah!

Sometimes life sucks.

sorry to hear it. it sure does suck. i'm sure it sounds cliche, but some day, probably next season, you will be viewing this in the rear view mirror saying "yup it sucked, but i'm back in action now."

can you still ride?

I separated my shoulder as have lots of folks in bike crashes. I find what the docs say vary quite a bit. Is your's a grade II?

I didn't swim for about 4 weeks then started back doing 100 yds and gradually worked my way back.

Now it actually hurts more doing long runs than swimming. If you can get some PT as it helps strengthen your shoulder muscles as all those stretched ligaments won't go back to normal.

Sorry about the missed races...been there..it sucks!

Sorry to hear it.  I had a Grade III separation Feb 4 and was back in the pool within a month doing 3K workouts, and started IMAZ in April

But mine was a complete separation, no more damage could be done.  Sounds like you have the opportunity to heal (and your bump won't be as big).  Will the RDs defer entry or refund?

It is a Grade 2 separation, and I am expected to make a complete recovery without surgery or PT.

The RD for the Nations Tri would not refund, or apply my fees to next years race (and it was $150!!).

The RD for the Wilmington Tri is sending me a complete refund.

I can still run, so Army 10-miler 10/5/08 in DC here I come!!!

I feel your pain. I fell On August 31st between mile 1 and 2 of the Rock and Roll Half Marathon in Va Beach. I have a non-displaced fracture of the humerus. This essentially means I have a crack in my arm.

The race was supposed to just be a fun celebration for my 40th birthday. My "A" race this year was to be Ironman Florida on November 1st. Needless to say, no Ironman for me this year. My doctor said six to eight weeks of physical therapy.

I am out the $500 that I paid for the race and a year of training. However I hope to be swimming in 3-4 weeks. We shall see.

Good luck on your recovery!

Ironman Florida 2009 here I come.

Hmm . . . I sense an unfortunate theme to this thread!  I crashed my bike and separated my shoulder on 5-23.  Got with my physical therapist right away, who said to try swimming.  So about a week after crash, I started swimming, 50 yds, then 100 yds. in a couple days, then 150 yds. etc.  Slow process!

Physical therapy was the key for me.  My shoulder still twinges, but as long as I keep doing my exercises and keeping my strength/stability up, it's OK.

Sorry about your season

sorry to hear - not much of a consolation, but at least you can still run, though.

Sorry to hear this. I fractured my shoulder in a crash on 8/10 and it ended my season. I lost tons of race fees too. After a month I'm finally able to run again and I'll be doing the Army 10 as well! I've been swimming with one arm because it will be months before I'm allowed to use my arm, so if you're really anxious to keep swimming, it's actually not so bad with one arm. Hope you have a speedy recovery.
