I finished my first bike century over the weekend. A profile of the ride is attached for your amusement. What I've noticed while training for this ride and after this ride is that when I do something physically significant like this, I start generating a huge amount of body heat. After the event, after I've mingled with the other riders, after I've gone home and showered, I get really hot as if I've got a fever. My wife says that my skin is very warm to the touch and I am very warm as if the heat is up too high. I don't feel bad in any way other than being too warm.

Does anyone else have this reaction? Any explanations?

You generated a lot of heat in your event. Metabolism generates heat. Your used a lot of energy in your event. Your skin is your major heat exchanger.

It happens to me, too.

Damn, that looks ALOT like my century profile. Just shift it over so the big climb starts at about mile 35-40 and I would swear you were doing the same exact ride.

...btw I agree with the guy above about generating the heat.

Yeah, I respect the process of generating heat DURING the ride, but this is about 3-4 hours after the process. By the time I start cranking out heat, I've long since finished. Why is my metabolic rate racing that long after I've stopped expending energy?

BTW, here's the link for my ride. A long way from New York. 8^)

  • Why is my metabolic rate racing that long after I've stopped expending energy?

  • You have not stopped expending energy, and your body is starting to repair itself. You may have stopped racing, but your body may not have. Are you still sweating? If not your skin will feel hot. What was your exertion level during the ride and fitness level? How often do you do rides similar to this in profile?

I second this, sometimes I still create heat a day later depending the extent of the ride compared to my fitness level. FOr instance, I did 30 miles in 88 degrees and 100% humidity on saturday...(brutal in NOrth Carolina) on Sunday, as soon as I would step out of the nice air conditioned car into a not so nice air conditioned area, i would be sweating like I just got off the bike. Plus, saturday even at the hotel, I was still hot. My daughter wouldn't sleep with me, she slept in my mom's bed, I was too hot. Normally she is the little hot pocket and I can't get far enough away.

I do the exact opposite.  Once I stop, I have to pretty quickly change out of my wet / sweaty clothes or I get really chilled and cold.  (I am cold in temperatures under 80 though, so maybe I'm not normal)

Same thing happens to me. I did an Oly Tri on Sat. Sat evening my wife sat next to me on the couch and remarked how my body was radiating heat.

Interesting, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that experiences this one.

I've been doing rides like this (but with only one climb) once a week for about 3 months, plus shorter more normal rolling terrain rides twice per week. The most bizarre part is that during the ride I'm fine - sweating and hot like normal. After the ride, I cool down as I would expect. Then, about 3 hours later I start heating up again. I guess that's when my repair processes kick in.

    Wild stuff. 8^)

I think it might not be a bad to ask your doc the next time you visit.

It seems rather strange to me. It could be a fitness issue perhaps. I used to be really cold after my long rides even though I wasn't cold riding during the spring. It was suggested to me that it was either a fitness or electrolyte issue.
