Hi.

I am a 44 year old novice, I started "triathlon training" in December 2003. I am fortunate that I have latched on to a bunch of seasond triathletes.I come from a running back ground, being cycling for 6 months but the swimming is a problem. I go to swimming training for
3 x 1 hour sessions a week and do an extra hour on my own. My goal is to do an iron man in March 2005, I am concerned that I may not be swimming fit by then, I am progressing but the progress is slow. Maybe that I am being impatient? Any advice?

Let me be ther first to say welcome to the board -- you will undoubtedly get lots of tips and advice from the knowledgeable and hlepful folk here. Glad you found us.

Wow though -- an IRONMAN as your first TRI. That sounds amazing to me, but you must feel that you can get into pretty good shape by then. It does sound like you are doing a lot of swimming for it. Good luck.

Welcome Craig - great goal! The swim is within reach by 2005 - check the "swim" threads in tri talk - there is a lot of really good information here.

Thanks for the reply. I was a little vague in my introduction, the Ironman in March 2005 is my main goal.
I have done one mini triathlon- 500 meter swim, 20 km cycle and 5 km run. I plan to fill the rest of the
year up by doing more of the smaller events progressing up to a half ironman etc. I still enjoy doing the individual
events ( cycling & running ). I have got the Comrades marathon "89 km" coming up in June, this will be my 6th Comrades.
I get a little confused in that I hear two different training strategies with regards to my main goal (Ironman 2005)
One being - a structured based triathlon training and avoid doing the ultra events such as the Comrades
The other being - do what you enjoy but try a keep a balance.
What do you recommend?

Craig,

Wow! You have an amazing goal and determination. An Ironman! Whew! That's awesome. About the swim. With your other Spring tris and your overall athletic inclinations you will be ready by 2005. There's no quick fix on the swimming. Time in the pool is what makes it work. Not just because you get faster, or can go farther mostly because you get used to it so breathing in water is like breathing on land.

You go boy! Kick some major butt!

Whoo Doggies!

Ovetta.
