After months of training, I finished my first triathlon this weekend. 1/3 mile swim, 12 mile bike and 2 mile run. Time: 1:09:45. 133rd out of 334 overall, 21st of 34 in my AG (40-44). I'm very happy with my result and am thinking about the future.

Coincidentally, a friend is thinking about going to the Timberman 70.3 in New Hampshire next August and wants to know if I would like to go with him. I had been thinking about trying for the Austin 70.3 in 2011 because I've always wanted to visit there and it seemed like a great tri goal as well.

So my questions are many: Is this advisable? Do I have enough time to train? Do I need to maintain a 6-day-a-week training schedule for the next 12 months? Can you tell me about these courses? What would you do?

I pushed myself during the race and was exhausted at the end but not dead. I recovered pretty quickly and am already thinking about getting back to the gym but I think I need a little rest/cooling off period before i make a big decision.

Thanks!

You can always try an Oly this season to help you decide. Registration has not yet opened for Timberman. I just did my first triathlon, an Oly and decided I was going for Timberman 70.3 next year. I am doing one more Oly before our season closes here in the N.E.

Way I see it - is I have 12 months to prepare which should be more than enough time.

Mind you - I am not winning anything and am BOP kind of girl. So if your thought is to do the race to do it, I say why not.

Great job Andy. Take some time off, another week. It will pay off expecially with this rediculous heat we are having. I dont know much about Austin 70.3 but have heard tons of great things about Timberman. Either race you have plenty of time for training. As you know I am signed up for IMLP in July 2010. My training plan just has me having fun and getting technuque and comfort levels back until beginning of March when my plan begins to ramp up. So - no you dont have to train for the entire 12 months, but should keep some level of fitness. I am focussing on hill training on the bike for the next few weeks to prep for a centruy I am doing on October 3. Let me know if you want to join me any time.

Again, congrats on the race.

Thanks Scott. I'll be calling you soon. The time I spent on Old Short Hills Road paid off the other day.

You should be proud of yourself. I did a pathetic hill ride to Chatham on Sunday at 2PM in the heat at a paltry 13.9 MPH pace. I gotta get climbing

12 months is plenty of time to train!
I'd recommend doing a winter maintenance program, or an Olympic distance training program in the "off season" and then picking up an 18- or 20-week HIM training plan to train for the actual race. There is a free beginner HIM plan on this site.

Good luck! I am doing Austin this year - I spectated last year and absolutely HAD to sign up for it. It is a great race!

I spent about 9 hours a week training for the sprint and I'm worried a 18-20 hour/week plan will kill my life...

Andy, the 18-20 was a referrence to the number of weeks in the plan, not necessarily the hours. I think my IM plan maxes out at 16 per week. You can definitely do it averaging 2 hours a day.

Why don't you come on up this weekend and check it out?

Gonna be one heck of a par-teeeeeee! Tons of BTers, lots of cowbell (oooh, mental note, get cowbell...), great time. Then, you can check out not only the race route but the whole atmosphere. I bet they wouldn't say no to a last-minute volunteer, either.
