A humbling reminder about how carefull we need to be.  There was probably nothing he could do to avoid.  I was just on that stretch of road Saturday morning.  I know I get too comfortable out there.  Especially on a road like this with a nice wide bike lane.  Ride safe and wave if you see a fat guy on a Fuji in a bright red jersey!

Aside from the heat, this is another reason I'm mainly using the trainer anymore. Everytime I log on here or ST, I see more threads about cyclists getting hit, hit and runs, etc.

Hope he recovers, and too bad they can't charge the piece of @#$! that hit him with more.

This is so sad, if anyone hears about a fund or any types of events, etc for this cyclist please post it so that we may be involved.

My heart goes out to the cyclist and the family - speedy recovery!

That really sucks. Does anyone know who it was? I was riding near there yesterday afternoon. It is crazy how often sober people, at least I assume they are sober, don't see you no matter how bright your jersey or lights. I can't image a person over twice the legal limit can see much at all. My friend and I came within a couple feet of getting run into by a guy Saturday morning on Brown road east of Greenfield at 7:00 in the morning. As soon s I saw the guy coming at us in the turning lane I could tell he wasn't paying attention, but thought there was no way he couldn't see us, I was wrong. TRUST NO ONE BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A CAR!!

I'll ask around work.  A friend of mine told me about this today.  We see the Red Mountain Brumby's out up here all the time (they went by as we were heading out on last Thursdays morning ride), I sure hope this guy was not a Brumby (mentioned in this thread) as they had a HORRIBLE weekend.  Luckily an EMT was on the scene as the guy who hit the back of the SUV had a severed esophagus.  DAMN.

Got another email about this at work:http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=7636047

Not only was an EMT on scene but an orthopedic surgeon, Green Beret medic, obstetrician, etc.  LUCKY LUCKY men.  Horrific accident.

Any update on how the guy is doing from the local crash?

I'm confused by the quotes in the article (well not really, but humor me).  The driver couldn't complete the sobriety test because he "was too drunk" but then said "he was glad he was stopped because he could of 'killed himself or someone else'."

So the guy knows he's too drunk to drive, is glad to be stopped but yet acknowledges "striking" something and yet drove on?

WOW.

Don't know if you guys are aware of this...2 of BT's own were run over in CO while training for Worlds.  Dick Dime and JuliaPurr.  Dick Dime is in really bad shape.   Julia was here last year at IMAZ to be Jen DeCarlo's support.

These BT'ers were also members of Team Aquaphor. I just received this e-mail today from Team Aquaphor:

Hey Team –

Last Saturday, 8/22, Team Aquaphor Athletes, Julia Purrington and Richard Paradis, were struck by a car while riding their bicycles in Colorado. Julia has major damage to both her legs but has no “life threatening” injuries. Doctors estimate she will be in a wheelchair for at least 6 weeks as she tore her left MCL and right ACL and LCL. Richard was just moved from the ICU to the MTU (Multi Trauma Unit) where he has recently been able to start breathing on his own, talking, and recognizing his friends and family who have come to visit.  During the crash Richard sustained a serious head injury, several fractured ribs, a punctured lung, and a fractured vertebra. Needless to say Richard has a long road to recovery but based on his progress thus far and the support of his friends, we are confident he’s going to come out stronger than ever.

The local community has rallied behind both Julia and Richard and have setup an Open Water Swim Race in Grant Ranch, CO for this Sunday, September 6th. All proceeds from this event will go towards Julia and Richard’s recovery efforts. The Aquaphor brand has already committed to match all donations made for this event up to $5,000 and Active Marketing Group will also be donating money to help both Julia and Richard with their recovery.

We encourage you all, if possible, to donate to this cause as both Julia and Richard are dealing with very high medical bills and could use all the help they can get.

For more information regarding the race, how you can donate to both Julia and Richard, and updates on Richard’s status please visit: http://www.dickdime.info/index.html.  For any other questions please contact us at: [email protected]

We wish Julia and Richard the best of luck with their recovery.
