Subject: New Orleans 70.3 Feedback
Thinking about signing up for this race, anyone done it?  Pros, cons?  Fun race overall?

I liked the race. Have a car if you can. Relying on taxis and the buses was a huge headache.

I have done the 70.3 in New Orleans the past two years. The point to point can be a head ache and there were some growing pains the first year. All in all I think it is a great race. I have about 10 posts on my blog regarding the race in 2009 and 2010. I would do the race again (I am local to the area) if I was going to be in town. If you are not local and are flying in – the heat and humidity can be tough for northerners.

is the swim always as choppy as described this past year? Water temp a good fit for a wetsuit?
Will be making a decision this week, was going to do Orlando but schedule conflicts kept that one out.

The swim is usually not as choppy.  The conditions were much more difficult than in previous years.  The conditions on the lake are quite variable and depend on the prevailing winds. 

As far as I know NO has been wetsuit legal.  They did change the temperature rules this year, though.

The water is almost always in the high 60’s / low 70’s. The conditions can be anywehere from smooth as glass (first year) to 4 foot swells (second year). Water quality is also a concern.

The swim start is closest to number 4 – Pontchartrain Beach. After heavy rains the ‘Fecal Coliform’ (also called turds per liter) can jump hundreds.

Thanks guys, i'll take some chop in the lake vs. a ton of wind on the bike..  appreciate the info!
sounds like the ambient temp is comparable to FL is in May, maybe a little cooler but same humidity..

you are going to get a headwind either way on the bike. Either on the way out, or on the way in. Take your choice. We had the nasty chop last year and a headwind on the way out, but a niiiiiiice tailwind on the way back.

I would prefer the smooth water and the headwind on the way back since you are gonna get the wind no matter what.

Like others said its a great race.  A bit choppy swim but I was in the early waves and heard it got a lot worse later, bike was what I expected (I live near Baton Rouge and am used to a little wind and a few stretches of rough road).  Run was hot but great support (thank you to bikini lady at the 6 mile mark!).  What others (may) have missed is that the finish line was awesome, even for a BOP'er like I was it was great (hoping to get a little closer to the MOP'ers this year).
