PC vs Powerbook

Expert  1240    Columbia, MO |  Subject: PC vs PowerbookI'm heading back to school via an online format and need to buy a new laptop. I'm very comfortable with the PC environment, but have been impressed with the Apple laptops. Who here has gone through this and what did you decide and why? Thanks in advance for your input. Impressive ease of use; I'm not dealing with antivirus and antispyware and antimalware stuff all the time; I'm not downloading and patching new drivers and such all the time; I'm just getting my work done. I've got microsoft office so there's no compatability problems, and then I can run BSD *nix apps from the command line. I've got SPSS running right now. I've had three Powerbooks in a row -- a 520c, a G3, and now a G4. During that same period I've often had a PC machine as a "backup" machine, but rarely had to use it -- I've got an IBM Thinkpad as a "backup" machine that was bought for me for some project or another at a different institution. I almost never use it; I can do everything I need to do on the Powerbook. I'm thinking of installing Ubuntu Linux on it because I'm sick of patching Windows. |

I had an ibook before this, and a dell laptop before that. my mac is just so much easier for hobbying: photos, making movies, itunes, etc. and there is almost no software anymore that is Windows exclusice (except some games, but I play only Myst, which is amazing on my powerbook.) But I suspect if you are even considering a laptop you are not a gamer... if you go the mac route, go to smalldog.com. They have great bundles and deals, and you can accrue points which get you deals on other purchases. plus, they are a very socially responsible business that has repeatedly won awards for customer (and commuinty!) service...

Pro 4909 Hailey, ID | Subject: RE: PC vs Powerbook Another vote for a powerbook or macbook pro. I'm writing this from my powerbook as we speak. The only way i'd suggest a PC is if you are doing computer programing and you are doing windows stuff. Otherwise, no other reason. Let us know what you get.
