Went to see a screening of "On a Clear Day" last night. A movie about a scotsman who loses his job (at age 55)and has strained relationships with his family, so he decides to swim the english channel...full of beautiful imiagry and metaphors. A big motivator for both love of family and swimming. It is being released next month, I recommned it only to those who are either a father, mother, wife, husband, partner, son, daughter, friend, ant, uncle, nephew, grandma, grandpa etc...it will touch everyone. USA release next month...go see it...got me thinking about how much I appreciate my family, and how swimming the english channel, should be on the list of my long term goals...big gulp....

I saw the trailer and it looks like a good movie.  Would you really recommend it to an "ant" though???

You know now that you point it out, I'm thinking that it would be more fitting for a water bug...

...I have to wear sunscreen or I'll burn my head.

Just kidding.  Sounds like a really cool movie.  My swim coach swam the channel in summer '04 but he was more like 28 years old and an all-american swimmer.  Still a huge accomplishment, though.

how far is the channel swim anyway? (Obviously it depends on where they cross it)

Longer than you and I want to think - most are about 21 miles.  Currents affect it, too.  My coach's swim had a few extra miles tacked on because the current kept pushing him parallel to shore.  There were something like 3 hours where he didn't make any ground on getting to shore.  GUH!!!

There were several channel swimmers at the screening (all average joes, not the world class set) and it took one woman 13hours with gale force winds and another guy 15 hours...I think he got hit with the current, and I seem to remember someone saying that it is 20+ miles...
