Good Morning!

I just discovered this site and LOVE it! I don't want to be a "lurker" so here goes. I am 36 with 2 girls ages 5 & 7. I've decided to try and train for a sprint tri. Hubby is supportive but won't be a training partner!! I grew up swimming and have recently taken up running. I'm doing my first 5K this weekend in Detroit (the race for the cure). I will probably be training on my own mostly. I am REALLY nervous but goals seem to motivate me! When should I plan my first race? Should I wait until next spring? I don't think there are many races after September here in Michigan and I am not sure I will be ready by then. I have to get a bike still. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Elena

Welcome!  Are there any sprint distance tris in September in your area?  I think you can do it!  You have more than 3 months!  Get started and see how it goes.  Maybe even sign up and then you are committed!

Good luck with your training.

Hi there. I live in Royal Oak. Where do you live? I'm doing my first sprint on June 20th in Maumee Bay (near Toledo).

Hi! I am in Farmington Hills. Good Luck with your June race. How long have you been training?

Hi, windsor, ON here...not too far...there are a couple of 'du's', in michigan in the fall, but I am sure you could be ready by late August, early Sept, if you stuck to a plan...go for it!

Welcome! If you're already a swimmer (which is what seems to limit most folks), and you're already doing a 5k this weekend, I'd say you're very close to being able to finish a sprint distance tri. Find a routine, stick with it, and you'll have all the confidence you need in no time! Good luck, and keep us posted.

Since I wasn't already a "swimmer".. I started swimming laps last August and joined Bally's. I've been actively running outdoors and biking since March. My goal is just to "finish" the sprint Tri and not to worry about times.

if your doing 5ks and still swim, a sprint tri at end of the year around august is doable provided u hop on a bike soon.  u can modify one of the sprint programs on the main site...take a look at it and map it on a calendar...u probably could get rid of the first couple of months.

good luck whatever u decide.

Greetings Elena, and welcome to this site. I am a 42 yearold mother of 1 5yr old daughter. I too am training on my own, with a supportive, but rather couch potatoe husband. You are on your way to a Sprint tri if you can do the swim and run already. Get your bike and hit the road girl!!!

My sprint is in August, although I would have loved to do one earlier, our summer is rather filled with commercial fishing openings, so I've had to be picky with dates. I'm riding my old mountain bike, newly outfitted with road tires. This will do for me this year. Needless to say, my list for Santa this year will not include any kitchen appliances---only tri gear!!!

Good luck with your training and let us know how you are progressing. There is lots of help and encouragement here!

Cheers....Darlene
