Subject: Feeler - Interested in doing a new BT Winter Cycling Plan challenge?

OK, this is a feeler to see how many would be interested in doing a new BT Winter Cycling Plan challenge for 2015-2016.  It's been awhile since we've had one of these.

Let me know if you would be interested...

Personally I cannot start anything until Mid November at the earliest due to business travels.  That would take the challenge out to mid Feb (skipping the 1st two optional weeks) or late Feb 2016 (doing all 16 weeks), which would be ideal for me since I'm looking at doing a Mid March Olympic tri right now.

Interested but I'm gonna need to hibernate for some time after IMAZ. I could start in late December or right into January for Oceanside.

Yep, I would be interested as well. Just getting back into some training after an end of season break. The weather here in PA still has not turned bad so I plan on riding outside for a little while but an late Nov or Dec start would be fine with me.

The link was provided in the 1st post where you can get to them (HR or Power based).  Here it is again "BT Winter Cycling Plan".  Its a free program so you can view the details & import it to your training log if you so wish too.

If you click the link Donto provided you then have to look to the top and select 'Plan Workouts' button. I found this a little tricky at first myself.

I'm thinking of a possible start on Dec 1st.  I thought about Mid Nov but we have family and friends in town before, during and after Thanksgiving and time will not be on my side then.  I'll let everyone know more as time gets closer...

I'm in.  Whatever start date works for me - maybe two start dates based upon if you plan to do the two week warm-up or not.

Still planning on a Dec 1 start? Just checking b/c I might set up the trainer in the garage next week as darkness has descended. I will most likely not have the opportunity to ride outdoors during the week so might as well start the trainer sessions. If the Winter Cycle Challenge will start Dec 1, I will just ride some other workouts in the interim.

Sorry, been biz traveling. Yeah I think Dec 1st (Nov 30th) is a good start date for the 12 week portion for the 1st official test week.  I'm going to jump on the bike between now and then and do some of the 1st two "prep" weeks to get the legs spinning before the testing begins.  I just wish the warm humid weather would break, ugh.

I circled a local March St Patty Metric Century ride as a finishing goal for this challenge!

Yeah, now that I look at a calendar 11/30 makes sense for a start date. I am in.

Downloaded the training plan today with the first test on Nov. 30th.  Now I need to get back on the bike and get spinning.

Definitely interested.  Will get the plan downloaded and start the prep.  Would you recommend doing the 5 min and 20 min test in the two weeks preceding the start to create the base threshold values?

If you have never done the two tests before you may find it beneficial to do them for the prep phase to; a) establish a baseline for the prep, b) practice.

Here's what I like to do;

  1. Do the 5' test first.  Since its shorter I find it mentally easier to go "all out"and hang on.  Note that 'all out' is not 100%, its relative to the time duration as you can't go all out for 1' and expect hang on for 5'!  After 1' you should feel "ah no problem I got this", after 2' "dang its getting hard, after 3' oh @%#^! I can't do this, 4-5' hang on and suck the wind!
  2. Then do the 20' test.  Knowing the 5' average, you can be a bit conservative if its the 1st time and start somewhere in the 85% range of the 5' power and build from there or go from a higher level around 90% and see how it goes.  My personal worst case ratio has been 85% coming off of no training to 93% at a peak in training.

I will do this one!

I have been away from tri for a full year and need to start back. My fitness is pitiful compared to what it was. This will be a great jump start!

Donto, I've done the 20' a number of times but not the 5'.  How much separation between the two would you advise for the results to be the most accurate?  Hoping the answer is NOT back-to-back.  That could really hurt.

I've seen the 20' FTP test be just that, WU, 5' all out, an ~10'-15' recovery period then the 20' all out with FTP = 95% of the 20' result.  No thanks!  Critical Power method has the test on separate days for hopefully a maximum result; a test one day (e.g. Monday), an easier training day in-between (e.g. Wed), then the other test (e.g. Friday).
