Subject: MTN Bike Rebuild Questions I took my old MTN bike out over the weekend and decided it's time to either buy a new one, or completely overhaul the components of my old one. If I bought a brand new bike, I'm looking at something like a Specialized Hardrock Sport, $390.00. If I overhaul my bike (the frame is in perfect shape), $228.00 (w/out tax). Here is what I would replace my components with (note, these are figures from Nashbar's website): - Crankset: Shimano C051 Dual Ring w/ Guard ($15.00)
- Front Derailleur: SRAM X7 ($30.00)
- Rear Cassette: Shimano HG-50 9 speed ($20.00)
- Rear Derailleur: SRAM X7 ($55.00)
- Breaks: Nashbar Deluxe ($50.00)
- Break levers/shifters: SRAM X7 9 speed Twist Shifters ($58.00)
Now, what I need is advice: the cost savings of rebuilding the bike is $162.00 (no tax figured in, or cabling). For the potential hassle and headache of rebuilding the bike, would it be worth it in cost savings, if the frame is perfect and the right size? The frame is old steel frame (Free Spirit from Wal-Mart), but very rigid and feels good. Also, did I miss anything important in the configuration of components? Thanks in advance!! |
