Subject: The new girl
Hi everyone. I have been thinking about doing triathlons for quite a long time and am FINALLY ready to make the commitment! I am planning on doing the 20 week Olympic distance program. I go to college in Ohio but stay at home in Florida on breaks, which is where I'll be competing. I am on the cross country team here at school and swam for 7 years in high school and college, so I have a strong background in at least 2 of the disciplines. Biking for me is pretty much foreign though, so I'm not sure how to go about it (especially when the roads start getting icy up here!). Any tips are welcome. I have 2 more weeks of the season left for running, and then I'm going to try to get back in the water and work on the bike a little bit to establish some sort of base for training. I'm really looking forward to getting started, and I'm so excited to find such a great web site.

Sounds like triathlons were made for you,  or vice versa.  It is really good sport and this is the best place to talk about it.

Sounds like you're going to do relly well...I know that snow tires exist, but I'm not sure where you can find them & if you're new to biking maybe riding in the snow/cold isn't the best idea. Probably the easiest thing to do (for biking) during bad weather is to find a gym where you can do spin classes. You could also buy a stationary trainer.

Good Luck!

Welcome to BT!  Do you have a bike?  If so, what type?

Cogirl, I don't have a bike except for a dinky mountain bike at home. I was thinking that for "snowy" months
(i.e. November-March) I would just train on the bikes in the gym, maybe do a few spinning routines. Then, in the spring I'd start to tain on the roads again. I'm not going to actually race until June probably so I was hoping that would give me enough time. I'm not sure what bike I should get though b/c I'm a poor college student with low finances. Any advice on indoor training/ bike buying?

Welcome Noel!

Be sure to follow the training plan and not "overdo" it.  Be sure to build a solid base to prevent any injuries.

Good Luck,

Dan

Welcome.

Don't worry about buying a new bike. I did my first tri a few weeks ago on a mountain bike with some slicks I borrowed from a friend. Everything worked fine. Did I leave some time on the table b/c of my bike decision, yes, but I accomplished my goal. Also got just hooked enough that now I might find a way to scrape some extra $$$ together for a road bike.

Good luck on your training.
