How should one coordinate strength training with swim/bike/run work outs?

I know this is a general question, but I honestly am coming at this with very little knowledge.

Are you talking about timing of workouts?

I prefer to do my s/b/r workouts first so that I can focus on form and technique without having tired muscles.

I frequently will do an upper body "push" set of exercises after swimming to balance things out since swimming is mostly "pulling"

But there are so many different strength training routines you could follow from a 2 day a week, each body part once a week, to a daily workout rotating body parts, to twice a week for each muscle group to cross fit to integrating p90x type workouts, that the number of solutions are limitless.

Does that help?

I am familiar with working out.

My question is more about which parts of the body to train or not train when practicing running, biking, and/or swimming on a particular day. Or does it make no difference?

Does that make sense?

I do strength as one of two workouts on most any day..but not my long bike/run brick day or my interval bike or run day. I actually do same strength stuff 2x a week. It could be a swim, bike or run day. I try to separate them by a few hours if it works out.

I can get quite sore doing new strength stuff as I change up what I do every 4 weeks. So my coach tries to put them in when it won't effect the next days workouts so swim after strength days works good.

I weight train 3x per week (MWF). Monday also includes a bike and Friday includes a run. The only thing I do not do much of is quad dominant lifts (squats, leg press). Everything else is pretty much fair game.

I find it very hard to do any upper body weights on the same day as swimming. Legs seems to be well warmed up after a swim, so I often do legs on my shorter swim days.
I also try to not do any chest or shoulder workoutws that will leave myu shoulders too tired the day before any longer swim.

Thanks! This is the type of feedback I wanted! I'd like to hear from some other people out there to get a better sense of how people combine strength training in their s/b/r routines.

Peace.

I do crossfit for weight training in addition to s/b/r. On days where I have a swim workout, I'll do crossfit - as long as it's not heavy upper body - right before or after my swim. If it is heavy upper, I'll either do it in the AM and swim in the PM (or vice versa) or I'll skip it. When I have swim workouts 2 days in a row, I don't to upper body on either. As far as running and biking, if I do crossfit that day, I either split them (one AM and one PM) or I'll do my run or bike first, then do crossfit afterwards.

In general, I just kind of play it by ear. Look at my scheduled training, look at the crossfit workout, and see how they mesh together and how I should attack them. If it's in conflict or I'm short on time, I will always choose the s/b/r over the crossfit b/c that's the main goal.

I also do CrossFit as my strength training.  I usually do it in the morning, 3 days on/1 day off.  But since CrossFit is a full-body exercise program only, using all midrange exercise movements (pullups, pushups, squats, lunges, burpees, running, etc.) sometimes I will do some extra sets of bodybuilding exercises (i.e. isolations...bicep curls, tricep extensions, pec deck, shrugs, etc.) but I'll do them in the evening before my tri training. I just don't go too hard because I don't want to use up my strength before my tri stuff.  That's the formula I used to get lean last fall.

Typical week for me...
Mon - AM 20 min CF
          PM 1 hour Tri stuff

Tue - AM 20 min CF
         PM 1 hour Tri stuff

Wed - AM 20 min CF
PM 1 hour Tri stuff/Iso lifts

Thu - PM 1 hour Tri stuff/Iso lifts

Fri - AM 20 min CF
       PM 1 hour Tri stuff

Sat - Long run/CF

Sun - Long bike/CF

Since I swim at the pool (until it warms up), I do strength training after I swim once, maybe twice a week. Always upper body, except once a month I will mix in some legs.
