This question is for my fellow Floridians. I am looking at races for my daughter for the summer and I am wondering if any of you have any experience with sea lice. My daughter is allergic to them and I am concerned that with the added stress of strenuous excercise, getting bit by sea lice could trigger an asthma attack. We are considering races in Dade and Broward county in May thru August, mainly so we can avoid overnight stays. Someone suggested that she should race on the west coast because they don't have a sea lice problem there. Do you know if this is true? Have any of you found sea lice to be a problem? Thanks.

The problem has also been reported in other years on the gulf coast of FL.  You should consult with your pediatrician on this.

Good intro article:

That was a very interesting article. I wasn't aware that there was such a thing. I have been going to the Gulf since I was a child. The only thing I've every had problem with was what the doctor called "prickly heat" on my legs and ocassionally on my chest.

I live on the east coast so I don't really know about the Gulf (but I DO know about sea lice!)  I also don't know about asthma, but is it possible to give her something ahead of time just in case?  There are also some tris in inland lakes so there won't be any sea lice problems.  Check with www.multirace.com.  They have races in Broward and southern Palm Beach Counties which will be starting up mid-March.

Hi Sharon,

She is on a couple of asthma prevention meds and I always pack her rescue inhaler in her bag. The first triathlon she was going to do that is an ocean swim is the first weekend in April in Boca Raton. I think we should be safe from sea lice then. They don't usually show up until mid-May, right? Also, do you have any experience racing in Key Biscayne? I was hoping to do that series in the summer. I thought that maybe sea lice wouldn't be too bad there, being so far from the gulf stream. We are planning on doing some of the MultiRace triathlons. Is that series beginner friendly? Thanks for your help!

I know that tri.  It's the FAU one at Spanish River Park, right?  Previously very windy, can be pretty choppy.  Has she practiced in open water much?

Key Biscayne I did Huntington's Disease oly a few years ago.  My husband did that one this past August and one of their sprints earlier last summer.  He didn't say anything about sea lice.  Multirace is very beginner friendly.  They are relatively small (125-150 people usually), they use the chip timing and call your name out just as you finish.  Hardware usually runs 5-deep (since your daughter is so athletic plus very young, that isn't out of the question), so lots of confidence-building opportunities.  Also if there is a concern about mass start in the water, several of their races (I think in C.B. Smith Park) are reverse tri's so there's no problem there.

Wow you Floridians have it rough. Sea lice and Jelly fish in the ocean or you can go to the lakes and get eaten by the Gators.
