Subject: what does one do?

So, I took part in a mini-sprint tri yesterday (half-a-mile swim, 5.5m bike, 2.2m run).
I'm no Michael Phelps (takes me over 40min to do the swim in a half-ironman) so I knew that with those ratios this wasn't going to greatest race for me and it was going to be all about passing people on the bike'n'run..
So, I take a rather leisurely 17 minutes or more on the swim and get to work.
There's less than 250 people participating and I pass more than 40 of them on the bike and run and I'm ten yards back and gaining nicely on this guy heading out on the last out'n'back of the run when.... he takes a huge shortcut. Chops 200 yds off a 2.2mile leg!
And he knows he's done it, turns to me as he hacks off the corner and says, "is it this way?" and i say, "i think it's straight on" and keep running.
So, I do the extra and think I'll just have to try and make the 200 yds back.
Which I do, so we make the final turn and he's ten yards ahead again and it's a flat sprint.
Which he wins by a yard, to loud cheers from his fan-base.

As we stand there catching our breath, he says, "guess i went the wrong way there", and i say, trying to be nice, "easily done, coulda used a marshall out there".
But the word 'marshall' doesn't ring any bells for him and he's off to hugs and congratulations from his team.

So, now I'm in at least four minds..

Should I snitch to an official (i don't)
Should he at least have given me a yard (and a place) given he'd taken 200 of them
Should I even be annoyed, it's a fun run after all, not a Kona slot
Should I just work on my swim so I don't find myself giving cheats a 5 min head start in the first place (of course I could have swum a 12 min leg and still had someone cut a corner in front of me)

What say you?

(And thanks for letting me vent, I feel better already!)

IMO, yes you should be annoyed. But is was a mini-sprint/fun so you did right by not reporting. They guy's a bum, and he knows it. Hopefully he didn't sleep well that night. Tri-Karma is gonna get him!

If this was for the overall win, yes you should have reported the guy. Not sure anything could have been done, but it would put him on notice so maybe he wouldn't be cheating in other races. Did anyone else see him take the shortcut?

IMO, you have every right to be annoyed. People that resort to cheating to win are a complete disgrace to any sport.

Yeah, I'd say let Tri-Karma catch up to him.

I used to play disc golf for money (not for a living, but for more than beer money), and back then, I made sure that cheats were busted.  Now I play casually, not for money.  I make it known to them that I know they cheated (usually just a look, or tone of voice, or change in demeanor, is enough), but I don't report them.  I've never raced for money, but I'd use the same principles there -- if something real is at stake (Kona slot would definitely be in that category for me) I'd at least make some (courteous) effort to get them to admit their wrong-doing, and if that failed, I'd make some (courteous) effort to make their wrong-doing known to the powers that be.  Otherwise, I'd do pretty much what you did -- though I might have gone a step further and said something like 'I'm pretty sure that short-cut is why you beat me -- hint, hint'.

dood, that's pretty crappy.

I'm guessing he didn't podium, though. And since it was for fun and he had family and friends there, i too would have saved him the embarrassment. now, on the other hand, if it cost me hardware or some other "prize", then i would have approached him and ask him to tell officials that he accidentally went the wrong way...if he refused, i'd do it for him...

good luck on your next. tri-karma will catch up to him...

To Donskiman, the field was spread pretty thin, more than 30 seconds to the next person after me, so it's possible someone else saw, but I doubt it. Raises a good point: who wants to get into a "he said, she said" over a fun run?

Thanks to all for the replies, seems the old adage holds: "it's only a difference, if it makes a difference"!

Tri-karma will see him get a double flat 28 miles into an out'n'back ride on a HIM.
Shortcut that!

I would let it go as well.  If anything, email the RD and mention what you saw.  Maybe next time they can place a volunteer at points like that to avoid the problem next year.

I agree with telling the RD.  I went the wrong way in a local tri last year, realized it and doubled back to go the right way. I would have appreciated someone at that corner to point me in the right direction.

Let it go, life is too much fun to worry about inconsequential stuff like this.  30 years from now when you're my age this won't even be a distant blip on your radar.  Life goes on, karma will catch up to him eventually.
