Subject: Practice Wetsuit Swimming?

I need to work on swimming in a full wetsuit, I've only done it once and I was horrible... I don't have any lakes available near me, I only have the chlorinated health club pool, I'm thinking of using my wetsuit there, regardless of the damage it may wreak on the suit.  Has anyone done or been doing this?  Suggestions?  What are you guys doing?  I don't see any other options...

I'll do it a few times a season. Once at the beginning before my first tri of the year to just get into it before the race. And then I'll probably do a practice in it once before any long races I have (such as a half ironman)

As long as you clean it well after swimming in the pool the wetsuit will be just fine.

400watt is 400% correct, make sure you shower in your wetsuit and get water in and outside of it to rinse the pool water off, you should be find for the amount of times that you use it in the pool. I would not always use it due to the risk of overheating your body, and chlorine is not great for neoprene over extended periods of time. If you think you rinsed it off enough, stay under the shower for another minute or two.

There is a guy at my health club who only swims in the pool in his wetsuit.

That's interesting to note... is it a full wetsuit out of curiousity?

First of all Chlorine and wetsuits don't get along.  Better if you don't use it in the pool that often.  And if you do, you need to wash it with clean water afterwards.  Submerge it if you can in a tub.  Unless you like buying new wetsuits more often than needed.

I will wear it one time before a big race to get used to the feel, and get it wet.  They can dry out if not used for a long period of time, so it's best to get them wet again..

There is a thread from one of the wetsuit makers that suggest putting it in the shower if you are not going to wear it before a race.

The guy uses sleaveless.  I know I over heat if I try to swim too much in my wetsuit in the pool.

If its your only option..go for it.

Better to train a little in the pool than not at all.

I'm doing a 2.8k ocean swim in a few weeks and I'll train in my swim squad with a wetsuit about once a week just to get used to it.

I like it I feel like the man in my wetsuit haha

That's odd, I've never had a problem with overheating in the wetsuit.

Also the two weeks before the out door closes for the summer it gets super cold so I'm planning on wearing my wetsuit there next summer. I got sick there multiple times last summer because the water was too cold and even starting shivering while swimming a few times. Not cool at all.

I don't mind having to buy a new one sooner - I bought it to use it; I'll go ahead and practice in the pool with it.  Believe me I need the practice.  At the 1/2 Ironman this weekend I was in the water for 53 minutes.
