Pros: What's you're IM pre & on-going, race nutrition look like?

I'm planning on on a protein bar & whole wheat bagel b/4 swim, 2 fig neutons every half hr. while sipping gatorade every few minutes on the bike w/a protein bar midway, & gels every half hr for the run beginning w/a protein bar.

I suppose along w/nutrition refinement, I'm looking for an alternative to fig neutons as I realize they're made from crap although they're dirt cheap. But I understand the body can only cycle so many calories per hour (I'm about 160lbs.).

As always, thank you in advance for your insight.

I'm no pro but I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night Laughing

When is your race?

Quite a few people who go long course use a drink like Infinit or Perpetuem.  That is supplemented with Endurolytes and gel.

Getting your nutrition from liquids will be easier on the stomach.

Typically, a bottle is mixed with a concentrated drink solution.  You mark the bottle so that you can keep track of how much is consumed.

This is supplemented with water in your other bottle.  Make sure to stay on top of hydration as well as nutrition.

You'll need to tweak what works for you during training.

I'm no pro to say the least, so you may want to ignore this.  In my practicing (you are practicing your nutrition, right?), I'm working with sports drink, gels, and Cliff bars to get something solid, which my stomach craves after more than 4 hours on the bike.  And water, of course.  You won't know what works for you until you try it.  (You are practicing your nutrition, right?)

Whoops - sorry, I'm no pro!  Didn't see that part!  But I did get advised by a pro!

I use Infinit drink that gives me 300cals per hour and 60g of carbs.  3 sips every 20 minutes ges me digesting 500ml per hour.  I top that up with gels, bananas, coke and power bars when I feel like it knowing i'm hitting the minimum with Infinit alone.

But there are some gels I don't get on with so I've practiced a lot in training

Since my first (1st iron distance) is late September, I doubt I can incorporate Infinit &/or Perpetuem this late in the game. Or should I?

I used Infinit in all my training last year and planned on using it at IMMOO last year.  Had major gut problems on bike and run and was unable to wear fule belt for the run without massive pain.  Took off fuel belt and thus lost all my hydration.  This year I am strictly training with Gatoraid Endurance and PowerBar gels.  Going to live off the course.

Wanted to add the gut problems probably had nothing to do with Infinit.  I believe it is a great product.  Just didn't work for me that day.

PennState - 2009-07-12 6:52 PM [Personally *I* would not use infinit or perpetueum. You are welcome to use them and there are many reasons too.

And that is the tricky thing about long course nutrition.  The corn syrup in Gatorade does not sit well with me.  Perpetuem does not work for me yet some of my training buddies love it.

In other words, you need to figure out what product works best for you.

"I take in about 300cal on the bike per hour... 200 on the run."

What do you eat/drink on the bike?

While we're at it, I realize I'm going to open pandora's box, but what do people think about fig neutons? I realize they're crappy "food", but after spending $5K on a bike, everything else seems prohibitively expense.

I'm no pro, but have ridden a few miles. I am a fan of liquid nutrition. I have practiced using solid food in the past only to not be able to tolerate them on race day. During my training I always practice using the foods that the race provide. If for some reason my nutrition isn't working out, I can always fall back on what they can provide and will have experience with those products.
