This has been a tragic season, my heart goes out to the family.

Let's all be safe out there!

An investigation is under way after a triathlon participant drowned in the middle of a race at Pewaukee Lake. The victim was identified as Daniel Murray, 33, of Milwaukee. The race director said it was Murray's first race.More than 1,400 athletes took part in the race.WISN 12 News' Jason Newton spoke to a man who dove in and tried to save him."He just went down," rescuer Steve Peterson said. "I got out of my kayak -- dove off the front end."Peterson said he saw Murray barely holding onto a boat and then a flotation device before he disappeared."I couldn't find him at first. I duck-dived down and found him with my foot off the bottom -- pushed him up. Once we got him up, the lifeguard and I assisted the Pewaukee Fire Department getting the gentleman into the boat," Peterson said.Police said paramedics worked on Murray and then transported the man to Waukesha Memorial Hospital."He was in a portion of the water that was being patrolled by the lifeguard and staff that were on duty, and they assisted him immediately. It's not known right now if he had some medical condition that might have precipitated his going under water," Pewaukee police Lt. Mark Flessert said.Peterson said the competition isn't as rigorous as an Ironman race but that it's still strenuous."A triathlon, even this short, is very challenging," Peterson said.Peterson wasn't even going to be out in the water Sunday. He put his kayak in to help out the race organizer. He said he never thought he'd be out there trying to save someone's life. This is the area's second triathlon death in a month.A south Milwaukee woman died in the Elkhart Lake triathlon in June. She also died during the swim portion of the competition.

About three or four waves ahead of me. Prayers tonight for the family.

FWIW, the lifeguards and boat personnel were AWESOME today. There were a couple of times when I needed their help during the race for a rest stop and they were VERY attentive. Gloria seems to get a bad rap for certain things (overbooking race entries, transition area set-up) but the water was full of lifeguards and boats today. Kudos to her for that!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was swimming past the boat just as they were pulling him from the water and I also just assumed it was someone who was asking for help.  Very sad considering it was his first tri as well.  My thoughts go out to the family and friends.

His profile is on Facebook. Daniel Murry (no "a" between the second "r" and the "y"). Many friends are leaving notes on his wall.

According to an update in the Journal Sentinel, Mr. Murry's death was ruled an accidental drowning.  How tragic.

Pewaukee Lake death ruled accidental drowning

July 16, 2009 3:32 p.m. | The Milwaukee man who died while competing in a triathlon last weekend in the Village of Pewaukee died of accidental drowning, the Waukesha County Medical Examiner's office said Thursday.

Daniel J. Murry, 33, was only a few minutes into Sunday morning's quarter-mile swim in Pewaukee Lake when lifeguards saw him struggling in the water, Village of Pewaukee police have said.

Murry grabbed a flotation device but then lost consciousness and slipped under water, police said. Lifeguards and other rescuers pulled Murry from the water, but he was later pronounced dead at Waukesha Memorial Hospital.

Murry trained hard for the triathlon, swimming and biking nearly every day for eight months and losing 100 pounds, his family said.

Harder Funeral Home in Brookfield handled arrangements for the family.
