Subject: Running shorts question....
Ok, I admit...I've never worn actual "running shorts" before.  You know...the kind you'll see in a running store, like the Nike Tempo or Brooks Epiphany.  They have the inner liners in them and are pretty short (the primary reason that I avoided them).  I generally wear a more fitted type of short...like "bike shorts" but without padding.   Well, at the last 5k that I did...I would say that 70% of the runners were wearing actual running shorts.  So...I thought I would give them a try...but I know nothing about how they're supposed to fit or what I should be looking for in a good short (or avoiding).   I also am not familiar with some of the terms I've come across, such as "split short".  How does a split short differ from any other running short?  And now...for a REALLY dumb question...in regards to the running shorts that have an inner liner, do you wear underwear with those or not?   Also...I'd appreciate any good recommendations on specific brands/styles.  Thanks!

Linda

Check inseam lengths for what you are comfortable with as the really booty runner chics wear those 4in inseams.

split short seem to be less restrictive on the leg and dont create that "sliding" up and down on your leg as you stride.

i've a pair of 6in split north face shorts with mesh "underwear liner" that i dont wear anything under them.

Beware of chafing in the groin areas or where your thighs may brush together... apply lube

I used to think running shorts were incredibly lame for guys to wear til i tried them.

Nike has a huge line of split shorts and "y" style shorts...basically they are all cuts that unrestrict the leg from the material.
Split shorts:

Y shorts

And then there's the uber risque super tight "volleyball" style shorts- meow!

happy shopping!

If there's a liner, no underwear needed.  Although I have a friend who hates the loose feel of the liner so she cuts it out and wears underwear under the altered shorts.  I have had no issues with the liner.

I LOVE the Nike Tempo shorts (which are the second photo in above post) because they do not restrict leg movement, but also do not split to reveal too much.  I personally do not like split shorts, but have friends that do.

Another thing about the Nike Tempo shorts, they are fairly inexpensive.  I recommend giving them a try.

Hey thanks!  That explains a LOT!  Yeah, I don't think I would feel comfortable sportin' a 4" inseam.  So I'll have to see if I can find some that are a bit longer...but that might be tough, since all I've come across have been the really short ones.

I just got a pair of brooks running shorts that are pretty long, and have a boxer brief liner which is super comfy, best pair of running shorts I've owned.

Would you happen to know which style they are, and if they are available in women's?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the nike running shorts!  I actually live in them all summer long.  I have several pairs and they wash well and look so cute!  Also, Since I'm not svelt I think they are a bit short for going out in town but around the house they are great.  Also when I'm running they breathe and are super comfy!

I too am like you with the bike shorts and wanted to try the running shorts....I do have some asics and nike and they do have the liner in with them and Im probably the only gal in the world who wears undies with em even tho they have a liner, but it just feels more comfy for me...That being said, no matter what weight I am, I still get the leg chafing and its too distracting to run with chafed thighs and of legs full of body glide...so Im back to the Ladies Under Armor 7" Heat Gear Compression shorts....They are good just for running but also over my swim suit for my triathlons...

women's model appears to be different.  Check out runningwarehouse.com to get a good idea of what's out there, you can look at women's shorts, and they're sorted by inseam length.
