Looking to sign up for either the Lake Lanier or Callaway Gardens sprint tris in October. I realize this is late in the season. Any idea what the water temps might be?

I think that Lake Lanier sprint was 71 last year.  Most people without wetsuits since it was a short swim and the water was warmer than the air at that point.

2 years ago the water temp at lanier tri (emerald point) was 72, so it seems pretty consistent. I also went sans wetsuit and it was comfortable (air temps were in the high 50s).

I was planning on doing this as my first tri. I saw that there was a limit of 800 participants, do they really fill up all 800 slots? Or can I wait till the week of the event to sign up?

Thanks!

And if anyone has any advice for this tri I would appreciate it! All i have is a membership to the gym, an exercise bike and some running shoes!

The Emerald Pointe, now Lake Lanier Tri, usually fills up.

Swim, bike, run ... repeat.  That's about all there is to it.  Here are some additional points:
- Go out there to finish, not for time
- Don't go out and buy the latest bike, gear, etc...
- During training ... do at least a couple of training sessions (in each dicipline) longer than the race distance to build confidence (e.g. swim 500+ yards straight in one session, run 4+ mils in another session)
- Tri to go for an open water swim ... make sure you do this with a friend, group or boat if it's your first time

Good question. I'm signed up for the Lake Lanier Sprint and was wondering about water temps also. This will be my second Tri. Did my first last weekend. I was wondering if I needed to get a wetsuit for this. Sounds like the answer is "probably not".

Definitely don't need a wetsuit.  the air temp last year was in the low 50s, but the only cold time was standing on the beach pre-race and the few seconds wading in before your wave start. After about 5 seconds in the water, it was fine and by the time you get out, you are warmed up and the air feels great!

I think I remember the water temp last year being much warmer than 71, maybe more like 78. I could be wrong, but wetsuit was definitely not necessary.

No i dont really have much information.

http://www.callawaygardens.com/Callaway/info/calendar/calendar.fitnessseries_triathlon.event.aspx

the above is the race website, not much info tho. You could try searching on this site through the race logs people have filed about that race. I found alot of good info on the LL sprint.
