Subject: Gaining Weight!! WTF!!!
I ramped up the intensity of my training about 1 1/2 months ago by doing many double days (morning swim, afternoon bike...or morning bike, afternoon run...etc) and I've gained about 5 pounds.  I don't get it!  My husband is trying to tell me that I'm gaining muscle...but shouldn't I be replacing fat with muscle and at least be staying the same...if not losing?  I'm frustrated because I already felt that I was at my max weight at 145, 5'8"...now I'm inching toward 150.

Can someone shed some light?

Three possible answers:

1.  Your husband is right (imagine that)!  Muscle is replacing the fat...but muscle weighs more.  Is your body shape changing for the better?  If so, this is probably the answer.

2.  You're overcompensating the loss of calories.  Its natural to eat more when you train more.  But if you're overcompensating for the calories burned during training, the weight will only go up.

3.  Water.  The first time you weighed you may have been dehydrated and the most recent time, you're filled up with water.

Thanks!  I agree, it could be any of those.  I do feel a little bit smaller in my clothes, but I haven't measured myself.  However, I do feel like I'm eating more.  I'm starving all the time!  I should have scrolled down the posts before posting my original message because another member posted an awesome article that touched on this issue:

How can I keep from pigging out after working out for 3+ hours per day?  It feels impossible.

Log all your food. Are you doing that?

Have someone hold you accountable by reviewing your food log.

I agree with logging your food.  I do much better when logging my food for multiple reasons.  It makes sure you are not just not eating too much but not enough enough.  You need to really find that happy medium.  I also log to ensure that you are getting a proper balance of protein, carbs, and fat.

I think I'll give that a try.  Does anyone have a suggestion as to the best way to log food?  Any good, free, internet programs out there?

www.livestrong.com has The Daily Plate. It's free.

Ack! That TIME article was terrible.  I ranted about it somewhere else on this board, but the study that article was based on was a) not a weight loss study, and b) a study for overweight post-menopausal women between the ages of 45 and 75.

Furthermore, the article failed to note that ALL participants (not just the ones who lost weight) experienced a reduction in their waist size.  This is a very important detail because of the risks associated with abdominal fat.  The study concluded that it was only useful for postmenopausal women between 45 and 75.  I have no idea why the author chose to base an entire article on it, but it was irresponsible at best.

Finally, the article discussed that one could convert fat into muscle.  Which is impossible, because fat does not turn into muscle.  It was discouraging to see that the article got published with such a glaring error.

Please don't let that ridiculous article discourage you from your fitness goals!

I agree with calorie counting if it's not something you're opposed to.  I'm a calorie logger too, and I particularly like the one available through the Runner's World Personal Trainer link (Training Peaks).  Fitday.com is also good, and recommended by my dietitian, although I find it a little harder to use.  It gives great nutrition info though.  Personally, I would not use TheDailyPlate because the ability for users to create their own items leaves you with a lot of funky data.  I haven't used Calorie King, but it's recommended a lot on here.
