The BT training programs suggest doing split AM and then PM workouts in two different events.  Are these workouts of benefit to performance?  If so, how? Why not just do a brick workout instead?

2 higher quality workouts due to time to rest & recover between.  With a brick workout, you almost always compromise the 'quality' of the second workout versus if you had done it stand-alone.

And not everyone (heck, not  most of us) has a block of time large enough to accomplish that, even if we wanted to.

I'm sure they are beneficial as you get rest between the two activities.

Lately I do back to back stuff only because I refuse to wake up in the morning to exercise.

So I do a run and swim 2x's a week... and a bike/run once a week.

That is becoming a bigger problem with the bike and run as it gets darker earlier.  I travel mostly rural roads and there isn't much shoulder so I prefer to bike or run when it's light out.  At least I can do the treadmill for the run.

I had to drag my butt to the pool this morning but I didn't feel like it was a very good workout.  Now I'm debating on going back for a better swim or to just go ahead and run tonight and try another morning swim tomorrow.

Since pretty much all races start in the morning, I'd go for that.

As was said earlier, brick workouts are not typically designed to be full workouts for 2 disciplines, instead they are a core workout in 1 discipline, say a good bike ride, followed by a short run, whose purpose is to get your body used to running after biking.  When you do back to back workouts you are cutting yourself short on the 2nd workout because you just aren't getting the quality out of it, which is a big key, and why you don't see any training plans out there full of brick workouts.  They have their place as a tool, but shouldn't form the core of your schedule.

i only train in the mornings as i reserve evenings for family.  so, i have to have more back to back workouts.  in a typical week, i have 2 days where i complete 2 disciplines and 3 days where i have longer workouts of only 1 discipline.  with that said, i did struggle in the run of my last OLY because it was friggin' hot and i had not trained in that kind of heat.

triarcher - 2009-08-20 4:48 PM I wake up very early and do two in the morning.  The evenings are for family.  I have made some really good progress with it.  Now, next year when I start training for a HIM I will have to split some workouts.  Right now I'm more than covering the mini-sprints and sprints I have scheduled with the morning sessions.

That is probably a great way to do it and I have wondered about whether or not it would be best to get used to training in the A.M. since, as another poster mentioned, the evens are in the A.M.
