I am riding a set up with SRAM red.  Compact double, with the machined aluminum powerdome 12-25 cassette.

I don't ride with groups very often but this AM i rode with a group and caught crap the entire ride about "whats wrong with  your chain" "why is it so noisy" and so on... I am still pretty new to biking and this is only my second bike.  The first bike I was set up with a really old set of Shimano 105's and they made some chattering as well, so to me chattering and chain noise was normal.

My LBS looked at it and does not think anything is rubbing, the shifting is smooth and consistent, the chain just seems to make a lot of "chatter"

Anyone familiar with SRAM?  Is chain chatter just something that occurs with this brand or is there an adjustment issue?

i had the same problem. It went away with riding, we had a thread a while ago on it, i will try to find it. Sounds like a griding bottom bracket right??

drove me up the wall, could not figure it out, only happens with Red Cassettes.  BRB with the link

here ya go

Yup, SRAM cassettes are "loud."

Which is why I'm running a Dura Ace one .....

Thanks for link... good read.

I spoke with the SRAM folks a few minutes ago... Their position is this:  The powerdome machined one piece aluminum cassette, no spacers/spiders etc and is hollow, and there is a "missing tooth" thing (yada yada as to why it is designed that way... they think it is better) so the hollow cassette causes of the some amplification and the missing tooth thing causes some additional chain noise... the faster you peddle the more thie missing tooth thing makes noise.  But it is lighter... and though that may be true I am not certain the amount that is it lighter is really making me any faster...

Shimano cassette... interesting... and does that make it quiet?

Get a Force cassette.  The OG-1070 has the missing tooth and the PG-1070 does not have the missing tooth.  You are not going to notice the extra 50g in weight.

I also have a Dura Ace cassete and it does not shift as well with the SRAM Red derailleur.  I wanted to know why and I found that the cogs are actually spaced further apart on the Dura Ace cassette than the SRAM cassette.  I checked it with a micrometer.

Yes, getting the DA one (or any Shimano 10-speed for that matter) will be a bit quieter.

And there should be zero issues with the shifting.  They are compatible.  I am running full Red with an 11-23 DA cassette and have no problems at all.  The difference in spacing is minimal at best.

In fact, I had more hesitation and inconsistency (which was still very rare) when I was running full Dura Ace than I do with the Red.  Go figure ......

My issues could also be a combination of the spacing and chain.  The shimano chain is wider than the SRAM Red/Force chain.  It would possbile work better with a shimano chain. I might have to try that but, then again, I do not care about the noise or what others think about the noise.

Same.  The noise isn't an issue.  I helped get a friend of ours a Guru with Ultegra on it and it had an 11-23, so I picked her up a SRAM Rival/Force 12-25.  Shifts great, but even with all Shimano it is still loud.  I just did a "Huh, that's interesting" and went about finishing tuning it up and getting her fit right (former road racer, bike mechanic and salesman).

I love the noise. Saves me from having to say "on your left!"

Wavedog... my problem is the opposite.  I have people riding by me asking "what's wrong with your bike, sounds like it needs adjusted"
