Subject: Insomnia and you
Howdy ho folks it's 4:40 in the A.M. and here I am surfing the net. I have had a pretty bad problem with insomnia for about six years since I have worked in the fire service. Just got back from a seizure call. I have tried everything under the sun. Ambien, benadryl, valerian root, sleep aid teas, not drinking caffeine after 5pm, sonata, and now temazepam. Now I work 24 hour shifts and am usually up at different times throughout the day. The only time I get 7-8 STRAIGHT is on an off day and that's pure luck because my circadian rhythm is wacked out. The only thing that remotely works is a super hard workout. So what are your expieriences with insmonia and what are your remedies? Time to put a pot of coffee no sense in laying back down(:

No comments really, except I guess that's the price you pay for only working 9 days a month . Sheesh.

I've had pretty bad problems with insomina. Tried lots of things that never seemed to work. Recently, I've tried melatonin. Taking 3mg about a half an hour or an hour before bed. I fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up without the icky, groggy feeling I'd get after being on sleep medication.

I've had sleeping problems since I was in high school. I'm 30 now. I've always been very cynical about shrinks but it finally got to a point where I realized I couldn't figure out the problem on my own. I tried everything but drugs (I feel as Americans we are over medicated). I finally went to a shrink and talked out my issues and what was going on in my head. She recommended some drugs, which I declined, but she suggested I try to some mental excercises. The excercises helped (calming techniques), but I think the thing that helped me the most was finally getting an understanding of what my problem is/was. It's like that noise when you are a kid that scares you and keeps you up. You don't want to get up to find out what the noise is, because you are scared of it, but once you know what the noise is, it's not so scary anymore. It's still there, it still sounds the same, but you know you shouldn't be scared of it.

Anyhow - I've never taken any medication for it, but with some breathing/calming excercises, as well as some knowledge, I have slept better than I hvae for years. Some nights I'll still have trouble falling asleep, but not nearly the problem I used to have.

Thomas Edison used to sleep something like 2 hours a night. Maybe you are just a genius and could use that time inventing!

But really, if I see a restless night ahead I'll take a melatonin and a magnesium. Sleepytime Extra tea is good to. When I'm really hard up I will go for one Excedrin PM (try to avoid this though since it is a drug and also the groggy feel in the morning).

Also, a heating pad helps to make you sleepy. If you read in bed put it on your shoulders or lower back while you are reading.

Sweet dreams!

I have been a horrible sleeper since I was a kid and being in a similar field I know what it is like to have to come down from an adrenalin rush.
I always do something for my brain so it doesn't work and that is watch a movie. Yep one of those, I'm not saying this, chick flick boring ones. Turns the brain right off. I used to sleep with a white noise machine and or with the t.v. on to shut my brain off.
Good Luck

Hey. I was busy blogging about insomnia at 3:30 this morning, so I feel your pain. Mine is stress and caffeine combinations, though--I feel stress and need to stay awake to deal with it, then I caffeinate and can't sleep when I'm ready.  If you're constantly changing schedules, I don't know what you do about changing your sleep cycle. I'd do it too, to work 9 days a month!

Kiteflyer posted these links on my blog after my rant--maybe they'd have something you haven't tried.

Good luck. If I have some, I'll be sleeping by 9:00 tonight.

Good luck.

Granted my friend I work a 56 hour work week, not a measly 40 hour one.

The problem is one second your sitting down and the next your charging through a door into a house on fire. It's just impossible to wind down like the average joe. Well I made an appointment to have a sleep study done. It will be interesting.
