Subject: Compare: Mont-Tremblant and Great Floridian Bike Course

Hi All,

I just completed my second full iron distance tri.  Last year (2011) I did Beach 2 Battleship and found the event to be, overall, absolutely terrific--but also acknowledging that, while the course was flat, I found the wind on the bike course to be very challenging.  This past weekend (2012) I did Great Floridian.  That event was also terrific--but I found the hills on the bike course to be really really really hard.

I'm thinking of trying to get into the 2013 Mont-Tremblant Ironman....but I'm a bit wary of the bike course.  Any opionions about how hard the bike course on Mont-Tremblant is?  Especially, can anyone compare Mont-Tremblant's bike course to the Great Floridian's bike course?

Any help or opinions on this would be SO appreciated.

Not sure about GF bike course but if you log onto the ironman website for Mont Tremblant, it has the bike profile map on there. I cant recall the exact amount of elevation but I hear its similar to LP. I am going to be doing MT in 2014 and I am working on my hills now. When looking at the profile, it says it has a few 6% grades and a 12% grade but I am not sure how long they are. Lots of people commented about how great of shape the roads are in up there but I have no info on wind. I would try and read some RR from others who did it this year. Good luck trying to get in this year, I believe its sold out but you can still get in via the Foundation slots.

I did the Mt Tremblant 70.3 this year. Wind was not an issue as I recall. But the hills were legit.

Not "I cant get my bike up this incline" hills, but rather "I wish that I had taken it easier on those hills" as I was struggling to run kind of hills.

Trainingpeaks elevation corrected my bike at about 4000 ft of climb for one lap. You will be doing 2. Were I to go back, I would change the casette out for one with an easier gear.

The roads are amazing though. I went the fastest that I have ever recorded myself going on a bike coming down a very long straight descent along the freeway. Scared me to be honest.

Swim and run are great too. It might get a bit dark on the run. A big portion of it is on a crushed gravel path and I am not sure how well it is lit. Still, great trees. Nice scenery.

It was a very well supported race and I would give it an unreserved reccomendation. The town is great. Really easy place to have your kids along. Everything that you could need is within walking distance. I had no need for a car while we were there. It was a bit difficult to get to though. We ended up with a very expensive tranfer to and from the airport. Were I to do it again, I might look at renting a car just for the day to get to and from the resort area.

It might not be the kind of place that you will PR at, but it will be a race that you will remember.

Mont-Tremblant: http://www.mapmytri.com/routes/view/39108762

Great Floridian: http://www.mapmytri.com/routes/view/73236876

Do you feel that elevation is correct?  It shows about 3300 ft for IMMT as a whole, and someone said they had about 4000 ft for one lap?  That's a large discrepancy.

I think 3100 per lap so 6200 total was the general consensus on ST after both the 70.3 and the full IM.  My Garmin put it at 3400

I'd say that it is 100% as accurate as any Google map.

ETA: According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Earth">Wikipedia, Google Earth uses digital elevation model (DEM) data collected by NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission.

I raced M-T last year and loved it, and will be doing it again this year.  I'd recommend an 11-28 cassette because there are some stretches on the road to ?Lac Supérieur where you'll be glad you have the 28.  Due to my reduced training last year I forced myself to keep the intensity down on both laps of the bike, especially the hills, and had a 5:55 bike split.  You'll love the race if you get in.

I have not done a race at Clermont but went down there to ride with a friend when he was training for IMFL.  Those hills are steep, but they ski at Mont Tremblant.  Nothing in central Florida would be ski-worthy, even if we got snow.  Which we don't, this is good.

I meant to type 12-28, not 11-28...sorry
