Subject: Giving blood and training/racing

There is a blood drive at my company today and tomorrow.  I rode the bike to work today so I won't be giving blood today, as I have to ride after work.

Should I give blood tomorrow?  I have a 1/2 mary coming up in 10 days, and I am planning to do some long runs over the weekend.  It usually takes me a few days to fully recover from giving blood.  Light exercise I'm ok, but probably not a long run.

I usually participate in the blood drive, like once or twice a year.   If it's doesn't have too much a negative effect on my training/racing, I'd like to do soemthing nice.

I don't think I'd give blood right now if I were you.  It usually takes me 3 - 4 days before I feel like I'm fully recovered, although it has taken longer than that.  It just seems like it's too close to race day to donate.  Plus, it sounds like it would really interfere with your training schedule.

I wouldn't either.  You need to hydrate really well before giving blood and chances are after a hard ride tonight you won't be fully rehydrated and more by tomorrow.  Plus I don't know about you, but I don't bounce back right away after I give blood.  You are too close to your next race.  Make an appointment later on and give blood when it looks like you will have time to hydrate and recover.

I wouldn't personally.

Last month when I donated, it took me almost a week to a week and an half to feel "normal". I raced my first Du after nine days, although I did notice a good difference in performance. However, I did go to cross-country practice the next morning, just took it easy, but I'm not always the most intelligent.

There will always be another donor clinic somewhere. Try the website for company that organizes it in the US.

I wouldn't do it either, especially since you're doing long runs this weekend.

There is always a shortage of blood and blood products around holidays.  After Thanksgiving or around Christmas is a good time to give blood.

I asked my doctor about this a few months ago. He knew I was training for an Olympic distance tri. He said wait till the race was over. You might feel ok 10 days after donating but your body needs it's full oxygenating capabilities in order to properly supply your muscles for a long event.

My race was last Saturday. I am donating on Monday.

Good luck in 1/2 Mary.

Larry

Thanks for all the replies.  I remember last year I got light-headed etc even for a light work out couple days after donating blood.  may be I'll skip it this time.

Hate to be contrary, but there's no real significant variation among people in how they "recover" from donating blood.  If a certain amount of blood is taken away, each person will regenerate those red blood cells at a pretty standard rate.  Regardless of feeling ok or not, there is a difference in those who've just donated and those who haven't.

hmmm...maybe you guys get more blood taken than we do...

I donated for the 1st time in years in August (Friday) then the Monday did a sprint tri. Felt fine.  Donated again this past Friday, did a long run on Sat and a long ride on Sun. No problems.  ....but maybe I'd have been even stronger if I hadn't donated...  Who Knows?

But the real question is what's right for you and if it takes you awhile to bounce back, then wait until after your race.
