Thats a subject for another totally different thread...
Is it just me or does anyone find it quite moving that both marathons followed the course of the first Olympic Marathon. Starting in Marathon and finishing in the first Olympic stadium. Even the extra distance they had to add to bring the distance up to the 26.2 miles was a detour to a memorial to those who died in the Battle of Marathon in 426 b.c. In these days of over commercialism in sports to hark back to the very history of the event was great and to me was one of the highlights of the games.
Like I say its probably me...

I loved watching the marathon. It was one of the highlights of the whole dang olympics to me! Not only was it awesome that it followed the original route, but it was also the only event where I didn't hear "settled for silver" or "only was able to acheive bronze". I loved the sportscasters for that. I had missed the part about the protester, but I just thought how the Brazilian finished the race was the most awesome thing. I cried.... he was just soooo dang happy! I loved it!

What a great race!

I didn't realize that it was also the first year that a US woman and man have both medaled in the marathon.

I thought it was a wonderful tip of the hat, to the history of the event, to run the original path...yet somehow a horrible statement to 'civilization' that the whole race seemed to be run on a suburban expressway, past strip malls and salvage yards...could have been anywhere...

I spent a week a few miles south of Marathon in Nea Makri 5 years ago and not once did I feel like I was anywhere near North America. I've driven that "suburban expressway" if you look to either side while on it, there's no mistaking the fact that you're in a Mediterranian country with a long, deep history. As to the strip malls and salvage yards...it's entirely possible that they're in the same spots where markets and and salvage yards existed 1500 years ago.

If you ever get the chance, visit Greece. It's amazing.

THat was one part that I did really like about this Olympics was the continued reference to the anchient games. I also thought it was cool that the shotput competition was in the stadium for the anchient games in Olympia. I definately agree that we should honor the history behind the games.

Yes, I appreciated the announcers for how they handled that, but was I the only one who picked up on the way they butchered both the word "Mammoth" in referring to Mammoth Lake (how the hell you mispronounce "mammoth" I have no idea...but he sure as hell did....I actually had to shake myhead to make sense of it) and "Eretrian" (sp?) in citing Meb (US silver medalist) home country??? I was literally yelling at the TV... "It's Eretrian, you idiot!!!!"

But the finish..the brazilian...truly inspirational....it was a great race.

No, we (Eric and I) both laughed out loud at the "Mam-oothe". We're like, "where?"

I cried when the American woman finished, and I laughted (good naturedly) when the Italian man kissed the ground and then needed help getting back up. I think both Marathons were totally inspirational and very well covered.

I also liked seeing the Ethiopian woman's husband running alongside her during the race, calling out encouragement. Who else could keep up with a marathoner running 5:30 miles?
