I know, I know...HTFU, right?

Lately I've been getting migraines in the pool (I think from the chlorine). I can get up to maybe 700 yards before my head starts to hurt, and maybe 1000 before it just becomes unbearable and the nausea starts setting in. I've tried popping pills before swimming, but it only seems to hold off the migraine for an extra hundred yards, and then my stomach hurts as well.

Has anyone else had this problem? Obviously one solution is to get more OWS time in, but what to do in the off season when it's cold?

I get these too, but I cannot pin point the cause of them. After 5 mins or so, its just unbearable. I have to get out and sit on the side of the pool and massage my temples and neck to relax and finish my workout. I'd love to see what others have to say about it, cause I hate it.

I have never thought to blame the chlorine.  I always thought it was pressure from goggles or tension in my back and neck muscles (from bad form?).  Obviously the solutions are more simple if chlorine is not the culprit.  Not sure what you could do other than avoid chlorinated pools.  You could look in to buying a swim trainer for the off-season.

I can start sneezing from chlorine. I think a person can get inflamed nasel passages from chlorine or a poorly maintained pool, and then the googles can give you a migraine . IMO. I also suspect sometimes it is from wearing a cap that is too tight. I notice certain brand caps are much tighter when they are new. I stick with Speedos. On the other hand, I also think the water gods want me to get out of the pool.

Probably not from the chlorine....

1. Don't hold your breath under water, make sure you're breathing out of your nose or mouth while your face is in the water. This is the number one cause of head aches.

2. Look down, looking forward will strain your neck

3. Tight googles, loosen them up, take them off between sets.

I have trouble with this as well, and yes, it can be from the chlorine...

You might try a nose clip or an allergy medicine, however, allergy meds make me really dizzy in the pool.

I find that ibuprofen or tylenol works well too.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm pretty sure it's the chlorine, or something about the pool environment (blue lines?) that's giving me the migraines because I don't get the headaches when swimming with the same goggles and swim cap in the open water (Which I should do more of anyway...it's just way the heck out of my way and impractical more than once a week).

Sounds silly, but have you tried just relaxing in the pool for the same amount of time it takes you to go 700-1000 meters and see if the same headache appears?

I think my problems are related to #2 and #3. I will adjust accordingly this week and see what happens. Thanks!!

I really focused on 1 and 2 today...didn't even wear a watch.  No headache or upper back/neck pain whatsoever, and my longest distance to date.

+1 on getting in the pool and seeing if the headache still comes.

It may be the pool environment, more specifically the lighting. Intense flourescent lighting will give me migraines.
