Subject: indoor bicycle trainer

Hi,

I'm considering buying an indoor bike trainer to train on during the winter, but have never used one or seen one in action. Any recommendations for particular brands, or are there any particular features which are good to look out for?

Thanks!

I'd recommend a fluid trainer.  I bought a used Nashbar fluid and it's more than adequate for what I need, which is just some indoor miles when it's dark, raining, or 100+ degrees.  I had a Cycleops magnetic trainer that worked just as well, but it was really, really noisy.

Thanks,

i'll check both of those out. Quieter would be better as I live in an apartment block. And I would also be using it mostly just to rack up the miles for the cold, dark and wet days- which we do very well here in wintertime Ireland (and lets face in- in summer time Ireland too!) however the 100 degrees plus shouldn't be a problem ;-)

If you are in an apartment, then you definitely, like Sesh said, want something quiet. That can be a challenge. I have a cyclops fluid2 trainer (fluid obviously) which is very popular and pretty quiet.

I've been using a Cycolops fluid trainer for over 10 years and love it. I put a lot of hours on it during the winter and spring. My original one (an early design) leaked after a year and Cycolpos sent me a new one. Never asked a question, just told me to toss mine. They may have had some manufacturing problems back then.

If your going to do a fluid, in my opinion there is only 1 to get a Kurt Kinetic. And they can be had for $218.

This will be my 4th winter with a cyclops fluid2 trainer...look on ebay for good deals and be careful on shipping costs.

I've had a CycleOps Fluid2 for two years and I love it.  haven't had any problems.  I did get a great deal on a new bundle on eBay.  I think I even got free shipping.

Yep, I agree. I've got a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine and I really like it. Quite, smooth, plenty of resistance, and no chance of a leak with their cool magnetic coupling system.

Kurt Kinetic Road Machine here; guaranteed not to leak, unlike the two CycleOps Fluid2 trainers that both leaked on me after only a few weeks (and no, these weren't older models - they were both 2006 models).

Thanks for all the advice- I'm looking into Kurt Kinetics at the moment. The cyclops seem to get a quite mixed reviews, so I'm going to steer clear. Cheers for the help.

Hi,

you may need a shock absorbant/noise reducer mat. My brother lives in a flat and needed one as the neighbour downstairs complained about the noise.
