Is this a really bad idea?

In my oly last weekend I managed to give myself a nice wetsuit hickey. 5 days later it is still raw and I'm thinking of doing a 5K swim in a week. Before the race I applied body glide in what I thought was a sufficient quantity. I have this weekend to re-test my wetsuit (with even more body glide) but DONT want to experience this bloody ring around the collar again, hence my thought of just putting a few strips of duct tape across the back of my neck.

The suit was well adjusted - I think - and I don't have any problems elsewhere.

I would just put extra body glide.  I would think that removing the duct tape would cause more irritation than the burn from the wetsuit.

How about something like moleskin rather than the duct tape?

I was going to suggest the moleskin too.  I've used it for hiking, and it's the best invention since...well, uh, duct tape.

My only concern would be that the water caused it to come loose from your skin and rub just as bad as the wetsuit.

I've used large waterproof bandages and that worked well.

However, I've never been able to get BodyGlide in any quantity to prevent neck rash. I use SportShield roll-on instead.

In this case, I would liberally roll large amounts of SportShield onto the wetsuit neck itself, then lightly glide it over the bandages.

Good luck.

Suit Juice works really well too, and your wetsuit just slides off in transition.

Make sure it's the kind in the bottle and not "man-made"....

I have the same scabs from my wetsuit from last weekends race. I spoke with the owner of my local tri shop who sold me the thing and he recommend that I apply bodyglide not only to the neck but to the wetsuit itself.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. The scabs are pealing nicely!

I think a large waterproof bandage might be the solution. At the oly I used body glide and just before putting my wetsuit on, suit-juiced. I hadn't thought about actually putting body glide on the collar, but that is a great idea.

Depending on how large the area you need covered is, you could also try liquid bandage. The dark bottle with the little stick brush built into the cap, not the Band Aid kind with the q-tip applicator.

Start applying it in thin layers over the top of each other a few days before the race so you have a nice thick cover by the time you need it.

Might not work as well if the area is too large or needs to flex more than the liquid bandage can handle. However, it should be fairly waterproof.

Or you could just leave the wetsuit on the beach. Just a thought.

I'm new to the Tri world, but I have been a surfer for years....we use a kind of undershirt called a "rash guard" which protects your skin ( get it at any surf shop).  It is one more thing to take off during transition, so you may just have to put up with the hickeys....some people find that petrolium jelly works well too.

 -Good luck.

PS, don't duct tape your neck...but if you do, take a picture of your skin afterwards and post it.  I'f b curious to see what it looks like.
