Total Time = 1h 46m 26s
Overall Rank = 471/688
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 35/78
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:15 and took a shower, had a piece of toast while I got the rack on my car and packed my bag. Let the dog out, sat on the back porch and stretched before going. Drove about an hour to the race, stopped at an oasis to get some coffee and go to the bathroom. Parked the car and rode to the bike transition. There were some puddles, so thankfully I was there early enough to get a spot that was dry. Found Laura and walked to the beach.
Event warmup:

Not much, stretched a bit, listened to the course talk, wondered why I was doing this race on such a hot day.
Swim
  • 11m 16s
  • 800 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was not one of my best, got a great start running in, I ran about 50 yards or so then started swimming, didn't want to run too much. Goggles got really foggy, and I lost sight of where I was. The girl in front of me did too, we swam off course once, it was hard then to get a feel for where I was again until the last turn. I think my time could have been at least :30 better if I knew where the heck I was. I remembered how long the beach was shallow, so I actually swam until my hands hit sand, and then I ran in, so I think I was swimming longer than others. Made the run into T1 not so bad. The sand was REALLY soft, it actually made the run nice.
What would you do differently?:

Spit in my goggles before the swim. Ride the waves a bit better.
Transition 1
  • 03m 51s
Comments:

T1 was not bad, found my bike no problem, one of the first in my wave in. Got changed and into my bike socks and shoes pretty quick, helmet and glasses on, and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe have some water to rinse my feet, just put the socks on sandy feet, which I paid for later.
Bike
  • 43m 37s
  • 13.4 miles
  • 18.43 mile/hr
Comments:

The road was rough, lots of potholes out there. Saw many people stopped to change flat tires. I rode with caution, would rather finish a bit slow than have to change a flat. That would have added 30 minutes to my time for sure. Didn't finish my water and gatorade out there, which I paid for on the run. Overall a good ride, at least most people on this ride stayed to the right and passed on the left. Did have one guy fly in between me and someone I was passing. There was plenty of room on the left, he was just a jerk.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more fluids. My stomach felt weird because I was so hot, it was hard to drink the little bit I did. It concerned me, because I usually have no trouble finishing water on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

Again, slow with the shoe change. I was tired, walked out of T2 to start the run. Before leaving, stopped to stretch my legs. The stopped at the bathroom right after leaving T2.
What would you do differently?:

Shoelaces. This will be the same comment for all races this year, since I don't think I will be getting them this season.
Run
  • 45m 16s
  • 4 miles
  • 11m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

I was pooped, but managed to jog to mile one drinking station. Walked through it to the hill, walked up that. Then I jogged to next water stop right before mile 2, then jogged again passed mile 3. I ended up walking about a half mile after mile 3 mark, I was sweating like I have never sweat before. Ran the last 1/2 mile in, I was so glad to be done.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate more on the bike and during the run. My stomach sort of shut down and I started to cramp up a bit on the run. While I was walking, my mind was racing, I had thought popping in and out of my head. I was thinking really fast, and it sort of freaked me out. So needless to say, I will hydrate more for the next hot race I am in.
Post race
Warm down:

Warm down, stood in front of hose at finish for a while, the sweat on my face then ran into my eyes and I was temporarily blinded. Went to the side and rubbed my eyes so I could watch Laura finish. Stretched a bit, got some water, banana and sat in the shade. When we cooled off, went to get some food, which really was not too bad.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat really had an impact on my overall performance. I knew it was going to be that hot, but it is just so hard to prepare for it. Oh yeah, and lack of running in the past few weeks, I guess that had an impact.

Event comments:

Definitely a well organized race, lots of volunteers and police help. The after party was pretty good, good food, good prizes. Seems lots of people stuck around for a chance to register for Accenture in August. I would definitly do this again next year!

For it being "not your best swim", you were still one of the first, what, 5 or 6 of your wave out of the water? Geez. And all without a wetsuit to help, even.

*I* even thought the run was brutal and just wanted it to end.... which, as you know, is unusual for me! And with it being a longer-than-usual run for a sprint, you did great pushing through it. And you asked for running tips.....hmmmm..... "run lots"?

Really, nice race. Conditions were barely tolerable... wind... heat... potholes... choppy water (of course, that didn't phase you a bit)... and you still put together a pretty good race. AND you were even smart enough to leave a little room (:30, as I recall you saying) for improvement for next year.

So, you gonna sign up for Naperville or Pleasant Prairie??? You know you want to do one more race as a warmup before Accenture!!!

Holy smokes Marcie...for a "not so hot" swim, you woulda smoked me any day! Great race under tough conditions. Those are the ones that seem to teach you a lot. That hydration problem on hot days is really an issue, I don't any one of us really has the definite answer. Drink more than you have to...I think that's the best I can come up with!

Congrats on a good performance!

Wow! Nice race Marcie! You rocked on the swim (of course), even if you didn't think so. I'm just so impressed how you guys endured that heat and survived the run. Yuck.

----do pleasant prairie----do pleasant prairie----- do pleasant prairie----

Did you hear something? Must be the voices in your head.

How about I do the OLY at Lake Geneva? I just haven't had enough training for the longer distances yet. I'm planning on picking it up next week when Robbie finally gets home from his fun up in Oshkosh.

Hey Marcie, sorry for hijacking your thread, we'll make it fast.

Are you talking about the Expo? I have to work til 1 pm on Saturday so hopefully there'll still be things going on, unlike Danskin. I got there and they were out of all the free goodies you get. All I got was a bag, an XXL shirt(that's all they had), and a swim cap. OOOH, how exciting.
