My son started kindergarten today. A bittersweet event, and he was so excited. They start the day at tables doing the activity set out for them. Today it was little puzzles. The other kids started gnawing on the pieces or throwing them on the floor. My kid did his puzzle twice and started looking around saying "I'm done...I'm done....", which is pretty much my entire school experience in a nutshell. I turned to DH and said "Welcome to the rest of your life, kid."

Carrie, Congrats on Little Iowa's first day of formal education! So cool that he is riding his bike to school too.

This made me laugh..as I identify with you and your child. I read this to my 14 yr old (the Drama Queen) and asked her if that described her first day..she said no and proceeded to tell us how she cried inconsolably for us. I don't remember her shedding a tear, and I know she's spent a majority of her school years since with her hand in the air, calling "I know, I know!"

Congrats, Carrie! It's quite a milestone.

My little Nola started kindergarten last week, too. She went to pre-K last year and just loves going to "big girl" school. She's so cute in her little uniform, with her little pink horsey backpack. And the best part is, I get to walk her home from school every day, listening to her tell me all about PE (after her first day, she said she went to "EP"...so cute!), what Natalie and Jacob did in school, who got in trouble with Ms. Graham, and what was for lunch.  I'm so proud of my big little girl...

My Sophie started KG last Friday......so sweet. She came home with a gold key and when I asked her what it was for, she said "it is going to help me unlock many interesting doors".

My nephew started middle school today (6th grade); it was to be his first day of riding the school bus, too, but it never showed. Guess who got to drive him to school?! During the drive we talked about abstract vs concrete thinking. I love that boy!

Our baby of 6 has started kindergarten as well...Oh what a happy and sad day at our house. Now they are all at school woohoo but it has my wife longing for a baby at home. HMMM. The little one is of course the boss in her class and was so proud that she had "real" homework last week. The older ones keep telling her to just wait, homework isn't cool. Anyway if any of ya'll would like some fun, just drop by our house around 6:30-7:00A.M. when we are trying to find shoes and books and hairbands and belts and I am about to get re-flustered so I will stop. Congrats on your little one.

In know how it feels. I put Steven on the bus a year ago... well actually since I was in the hospital trying not to have JJ early my husband did and sent me photos. I was so sad. I keep telling them to stop growing but as Gene-Gene says "Mooooom, I can't start, it's my life cycle". Where do they get this crap?

Everyone was telling us we'd be crying when we took him to school the first day. Naw, that's not really me. DH and I walked out of the school with a great sense of relief that we'd gotten him this far. I'm not so much a baby person. I've rejoiced at each little milestone: out of diapers, bathing himself, brushing his own teeth, dressing himself, wiping his own butt (not completely there, but close). I'm looking forward to having real conversations with him. If I found out right now that I was pregnant, I'd be VERY upset.

Congrats   I know how it feels.  My 13 year old daughters start high school today, my 9 year old daughter changed from catholic school to public 1st day today too, and my 3 year old (4 next month) son can't wait for preschool on Monday.  Another first is my 20 year old stepdaughter started working in a sports bar last night, so its really busy around my house
