Subject: Legacy Project

As some of you know, I'm in a City Leadership class....where I'm learning to be Mayor and such.

One of the class initiatives is to do a "class project". We have all agreed that we don't want this to be a "one time" project, but rather a legacy type project that will be continued annually.

Some of the classes, in the past, have done things like:

Refurbish the homeless shelter in town
Build a play ground for a school
Held a book drive for underprivleged kids
Collected "goodies" for the troops and sent them overseas

While we all know that we want a legacy project....none of us had any ideas (this was about a 10 minute discussion....and then we had happy hour).

What sayeth COJ? Any idea's? The town is about 130,000 people. Whatever we do, we'll get funds from local businesses and/or have some form of fund raiser

I vote for underprivledged kids.  Troops get a lot of junk sent to them.  Those kids need to know someone gives a carp about them.

I say kids.

Yeah, and actually get involved with them; mentoring, tutoring, etc.

I had a buddy who was in a similar group, and they setup a dog park.  I say change that to kid park, if there aren't many available in your area.

+1

Even if you just go over the basics of modern life - how to cook healthy meals, how to balance a checkbook, how to budget money, etc.

Or, fund raise for youth athletics.

A place for kids to hang out instead of on the street?  Like a boxing gym, crossfit gym, paintball arena?  Kids only though.

What's the lay-out of the land?  We have a creek (Minnehaha) running through our town that starts at one of our large lakes (Minnetonka), and ends in one of our large rivers (Mississippi).   We (My Town) are currently updating all of the shoreline.  Native grasses are being planted, Retaining walls and walking pathes are being constructed etc..Canoeing and kayaking are encouraged in the Summer and classes about it are being offered through the community center.  It's a great way to get kid involved in the environment..

I know it ain't sexy but:

Do an energy audit of all of the town's facilities.  Implement changes.

A town that size can probably build a new park EVERY YEAR with the money you save.

mdg2003 - 2012-12-13 7:21 AM Kids - feed them.

X2 - I am a huge supporter of feeding the kids.  Children International is actually my charity of choice.  They did not ask to be here, it is not fair for them to have to go hungry.
