No, not another bad rock group name like Rancid Nuts...this time it's a question.  Has anyone else here opened up a bag of apples that just stunk?  They aren't rotten.  The apples in this case were a 3 lb. bag of Red Delicious.  Seriously, if you know what the smell of a dog getting their anal glands expressed smells like, THAT is the smell that is on these apples.  Could it be a nasty pesticide?  It doesn't wash off the skin easily.  The flesh of the apple tastes and smells just fine.  Please let me know if you've smelled what I've smelled.

This particular bag of apples was purchased at Wal-Mart.  (go figure)  They were grown in a place called Gardners, PA.

Like I said, if you wash them really good, the smell almost completely goes away.  (that sounds pretty bad when I read it back)

Nobody else has encountered funky apples like this?

1 - Unless it is a Honeycrisp, an apple should come from Washington State.

2 - Life is too short to eat Red Delicious apples, even from Washington. For crying out loud, at least make it a Fuji or Braeburn man!

A couple of things could be in play here.  For one, apples do tend to pick up odors, so if they were stored in an area with something with a bad odor, they could pick it up.  Second, since the apples were from PA, they have were harvested late summer/ fall last year and have been in cold storage since.  A long time to pick up odors.  IMHO, the further apples are from when they were picked, they lower the quality.  Not much you can do about it if you want a US apple in June.

Boo Washington, the best apples come from upstate New York!  But, since I live in Delaware, that's not consistently happening.  That said, it really isn't apple season right now.

My personal "best apple ever" is actually an Empire.  I will also put forth red delicious get a bad rap.  Yes, there are some disgusting Red Delicious apples out there...some that in fact smell like a dog's expressed anal glands...but I have actually had some stellar tasting Red Delicious apples.

Folks who love honeycrisps swear by them...I'm not one of them, that's just me.

The good news is that we just picked up some Galas, and there are only 3 of the funky apples left in the fridge...Daddy the Garbage Disposal (aka me) will be eating these tomorrow.
