Hi there!

This will be my very first HIM, and I wondered if any of you had any words of advice about the race.

Yep, the bike course is pretty tough, so train on some hilly terrain, the run is very flat and fast on trails so be ready for a quick one there.

I haven't done the race myself (doing the bike portion of the relay this year).. but I have done the route portions separately...

I agree with Mike - The bike course is definitely challenging.  It has a few good sized hills and lots of rollers, so make sure you practice those.  I personally don't find the run course all that flat - it has its ups and downs too, but it's not like you'll be climbing mountains by any means.  The run course is very forgiving on the body (mostly trail).

Where are you on the island?  Will you have a chance to test the course yourself before race day?

Hey guys!

Thanks for the advice. So the theme is "hills", huh? DrLeah, you cracked me up with "swim hills if you can"! Are there many technical turns I should know about? I have an idea about where the bike course goes. Am I correct in that part of it is through an idustrial part of town?

Vaiza::I live up in Courtenay, and we don't have a shortage on hills to train on The gang I train with are planning on riding the course (or parts of it) prior to the race. And I LOVE running around Elk/Beaver.

Ok...now I'm getting really excited! Only 85 days!! Gulp.

This will be my third time doing the 1/2 IM......did they mention hills? It really helps if you can do the bike course before the race, if not practice powering over rolling hills and using momentum.........swim course is no worries and the run is pretty much flat but a few ankle twisters...it's a great event. The One day clinic that they put on (I believe it's on the web page) is awesome for the first timer. Any questions just ask, have a great race and I'll see you on the course (more than likely as you pass me....)

We should all try to get together this year, even just for a coffee, there is a killer place close to the race site. Francelli's. I ride sometimes with a group that goes there. Good stuff.

Maybe we could all arrange to pick up race packages/bike check at a certain time and then grab a cuppa together.
