Subject: n00b help request - moving days around
Ok, I keep reading the help pages and am getting nowhere.

I am a paid member, have access to training plans, etc. I import a plan for my offseason. I love the feature of entering a start or end date - that is nice.

Anyhow, I import it. Here is one example that represents several things I want to do:
It currently has Run and Swim together on Sundays. I want those both to be on Thursdays. Thursday is my run/swim day.

I read that you can do this . . . just do a move it says. Well, that just does not have enough info or I am doing something wrong.

I click on move and I have to enter dates. I want this to change the entire plan - so Thursdays are Swim/Run days. There is no way that shows to do this. A move of swim and run will move all them and moves move to different dates.

Please help clear this up for me.

The 'move' feature will not move, for example, all Sundays workouts to Thursdays across a date rage.  You will have to do it on a per-day basis.

You can also stagger the import by a few days so that most of your workouts matches your week.  You will have to check out the 'calendar' of the plan and match it up with your ideal schedule.  Then just go back in and do any weekly modifications as needed.  Of course you will have to adjust slightly for the race week by the number of days staggered.

*In cases like yours, we usually recommend editing one week in advanced at a time to keep it easy-shouldn't be no more than 5 minutes a week, plus it better plans to your upcoming schedule should things change.  So for example, this Sunday you would only edit/move your workouts for the next week according your upcoming weeks schedule.

**Marmadaddy is currently working on a drag'n drop workout calendar editor along with our new custom training plan creator (w/detailed workouts) that we should have ready in November which will make these changes a lot easier...AND I am currently researching how extensive a modification to our current editor will take to do what you want.

Thanks for the quick reply!!

Right now I have a training plan in place until I do the Detroit Half Marathon in late Oct. Then it is off season until Mid Feb to start a 20 week 70.3 plan. As such, my needs are not that pressing.
I can deal with changing stuff on a weekly basis for a while.

Sounds like this already very good log and plan is going to keep getting better.

Greg,

I've been able to modify my plans the way you describe, but it involves three steps:

  1. Exporting the plan to Excel
  2. Modifying the plan in Excel
  3. Re-importing the plan for the correct date range.

Some tips:

  • The export/import functions are available from the training control panel - http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/edit-controlpanel.asp
  • When you export the data, make sure you export the Planned data, and make sure you "include empty days in the export".
  • Once in Excel, insert a column and use the WEEKDAY function to display a numerical representation of the day of the week (1=Sunday, 2=Monday, etc.)
  • If you sort by the WEEKDAY and then the date, all of your workouts will be grouped together by day of the week.  You can then move workouts from one day to another as a group.
  • When I'm done I usually remove the WEEKDAY column, resort it by date and then import it.
  • Importing is actually a two step process - first you import the plan and then you upload the plan to your training calendar.

It sounds complicated, but if you're proficient in Excel is relatively easy.

Good luck!

Ok . . . I am looking at this today from two ways - this and the excel method above (I will post on that in a second).
In this case, how do I change one week at a time? Say I have 6 wworkouts for the coming week.
How/where do I go in and manually say move a swim from Tuesday to Monday?

I just am weak in Excel, but my wife is strong . . . so i am going to have her help me.

I got a weekday column - good
I sort by that column, but then it is not right, workouts are showing up on days they should not. I am sure it is me.

Try this tutorial:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=480

From your log navigation at the top, you first have to get to your planned training...Use either the 'blog' or 'calendar'  PLANNED view.  So go to 'Calendar or Blog'--->'Planned', click on that and you will see that months or weeks training.

Figure out what you want to move around for the upcoming week.  In the planned calendar view you will see a 'copy/move/delete' link at the top, if using the planned blog view, each day has a 'move' link.  Use that to start moving days.  Make sure you select 'comments' so any workout descriptions go too.

*remember, you have to move sports into empty slots so nothing is overwritten.

I was successful with the spreadsheet . . . for sure the best method. I can take one of the great training programs here and make it fit my schedule with a 1-time effort.

Thanks!!

I might recommend creating a tutorial for this type of thing as I am sure others want to do the same thing. It took me some time to figure out, but I got it.

A tutorial would be great and I can add it to the import/export page...I will see if I can create something based on Scotts post.  I am actually unfamiliar with the Excel modifications that you both used.

I'm glad it worked!

I will take a shot and document it in a post. Give me a bit. I could not figure out the WEEKDAY function in excel, so I did it a bit differently.

I will actually make a word doc or PDF with screen shots and step by step. Should be done in an hour or two.

I have a word document with all steps and screen shots . . . how can i get this to you so it can be posted? I can do it as a PDF as well if that is better.

It should be edited or improved by others . . . I am sure it could be better.

Here it is if someone wants to download it.
