Wanted to get the discussion going on Branson. This will be my 2nd HIM and 1st time in Branson. Hopefully others that have done the race in the past or signed up for this year will chime in. Really looking forward to that bike ride!! I have a lot of hill work to do between now and September. Let's get fired up!

This will be my first HIM. I'm a bit intimidated by the hills, but very excited to start building my base before official training begins in May.

From those that have done the race before, where did you stay and would you stay there again? I have been looking at the host hotel, but I normally like to stay away from all the pre-race hype. I have enough of my own anxiety!!

I have done Branson the past two years.  Last year we stayed at the host Hotel, very nice place and worth the extra money in my mind.  First year was at a Red Roof Inn and not worth the money.

I stayed at the Hilton by Branson Landing. Nice location and room. They let people do late check-out on Sunday so you could walk over and shower after the race. Was able to walk over and set up T2 on race morning, then caught the bus to the start! A little spendy, but I thought it was worth it!

Is the roads for the bike terrible? I have hard that the roads are rough and that A LOT of people had multiple flats during the race. I am thinking about doing this race but hearing that kinda of worries me.

The roads on this course are near perfect condition.  The reason for all the flats last year was due to the rain.   The roads were made using the local rocks which "flake" off.  The rain caused the flakes to stick to the tire and work themselves in causing flats.  I used Conti GPS 4000 tires and had no problems.  If it does rain on race day you may not want to use a light weight tire.  Hope you decide to do this race.

I did the race last year and loved it. The bike course is awesome. I'm from south MS and this was my first half. We stayed at a condo on the lake about 5 mins from the start. Vickery Resort. If I wasn't doing IM louisville I would return to Branson. There was plenty of viewing areas on the bike and run course for my family. Other than the rain last year this was a great event.

I stayed on "The Strip" half way between the start and finish. It worked out but I would suggest staying near the finish line on Branson Landing. Traffic in Branson can come to a dead stop pretty quickly. I had no flats on Spec. Armadillos but many people did, like someone else posted the rain does that. It is hilly, I don't think there was a flat stretch on the whole bike course except the short stretch on bike paths. The climbs are long, not real steep but constant, learn to sit and spin. Stay well within yourself and let the climbers fly by and safe it for the run.

We are having a family get together at the race. We decided to rent a Log House outside of town. It's going to be a little more challenging logistically on race day for me, but will be very nice for the whole group for the weekend.

Hope everybody is having a good winter. I can't wait to get outside and ride this spring! I don't mind the treadmill but I'm not as fond of the trainer.

Last two years we stayed at the Thousand Hill Golf resort and iut was great! We paid $135 a night for a two bedroom condo with kitchen. It was money well spent.

In a way I am sorry I am not doing this race again, but the last two years were enough and I canlt say I will miss those climbs either!

Hi All,

I signed up for Branson and Miami yesterday.  I was debating between Branson and Augusta (again).  The drive to Branson is a little shorter.  This will be my fourth half, but the kicker is that I will be about 12 weeks postpartum if the little baby comes on time.  Needless to say, this will not be my "A" race.  Don't laugh too hard when you pass a flabby woman dying up the hills!  Laughing

Does anyone know if Branson sold out last year?  And if so, about what date did it sell out?  Thanks!

I signed up the day before the race last year at the expo and I was bib #717. I'm assuming that only ~ 700 people had pre assigned numbers so not not a sell out. I've done it both years and it was seriously about half the competitors in 2011.

Why do you think the numbers are low for this race? Are people afraid of the bike course?

I'm sure that is the main reason. It is ranked as the hardest 70.3 put on by Ironman.

Yeah. The hills are tough and the first year it was like 96 degrees and a lot of people went down to dehydration,  etc...

It seemed like in the weeks after instead of HTFU everyone was just complaining about it and it scared away a lot of people. That's my best guess...

It really is a great event. It's very hard one, but that's what makes it fun and challenging to me. I'd hate to so it go due to being "tough" cause the setting is great and the course is beautiful and the run course is incredibly spectator friendly.

(I would also like to add that the 96 was a fluke for that area. It was the normal 70-80 degrees in 2011)

I've been kicking around signing up for it.  One of the things that has me a little worried about it is the huge rash of flats.  I heard the road has a lot of tiny pieces of flint all over it.  Was all of the flats only the year it rained and the flint was washed up on the road or is there a ton of flats every year?

I had read that the large amount of flats were due to the flint being washed up from the rain and that the course is usually very clean and well-maintained.

95% of the bike course roads I would argue are the best in any race. I heard of almost no issues the first year. I was lucky enough to not flat either year, but there were definitely more flats in 2011. Storms were very bad all day Saturday and did put a lot of small rock chips on Hwy 465.

So I guess it boils down to:

Nice weather, they clean the road and all is gravy.

Bad weather, not much you can do but hope you're not victim....
