Seriously.  WTF is wrong with people??

Parents opposed to the program say the classes will indoctrinate their children  in Eastern religion and are not just for exercise.

Students were learning to worship the sun, which went against her Christian  beliefs that only God should be worshipped.

A friend of mine was fired from our local YMCA as a yoga teacher because she mentioned something some felt was non Christian. She said something about chanting.

My daughters and I do family yoga at our YMCA once a week, let me add this to my list of concerns. Silly people.

I would prefer to see schools let the kids have recess instead of yoga classes!

What would be wrong with having both?

IMO, I think kids need more unstructured time to be kids and to just play!

My kid's school has yoga. It doesn't replace recess, it replaces their PE class once a week.  Quite frankly, I'm a big fan. In addition to the exercise, it helps the kids learn ways to calm down and gain some self control.

In their first yoga class of the year, there were 20 kindergartners running around and bouncing off the walls. Now they all sit quietly on their mats, deep breathing and holding poses for 45 minutes.

I agree with both.  Sadly recess isn't what it used to be.  At our local elementary school the kids walk (very slowly) around a 1/8 mile dirt track.  That's it and playinig tag is not allowed.

Seems to me yoga could be part of the curriculum like ping pong was or tennis when I was a kid.

I guess it depends upon the recess time and how it is done a schools.  Our elemetary has swings and basketball hoops, and playground equipment.  They play kick ball, soccer, 4-square, etc...  They "play" during recess.  Sorry, I guess I still thought recess was outside playing and having fun.

Yoga doesn't have a place in schools. They should be learning skills....not how to bend.

Bring back dodgeball.....and keep away.....and other games that toughen up kids.

I just think that a 45 minute Yoga class for elementary kids is kind of silly IMO. I think there could be a better use of that time...

Not really questioning whether is is valuable or not, just small-minded people thinking it is anti-religious.

Replace yoga with gymnastics, soccer, running, etc. Would you feel the same way?

IF the Yoga is in addition to a "recess" then yeah, there are other ways for kids to relieve"stress" let them do art, band or other things that schools have cut that kids like.

Favorite Neil Peart lyrics ever, though slightly misquoted.

I prefer the full text of that section:

Quick to judge
Quick to anger
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand.

If they were replacing an academic class like math or English with yoga, I would agree with you. But (at least in my kid's school) it's in lieu of a PE class once a week.  How is 45 minutes of yoga any sillier than 45 minutes of basketball, or rope climbing, or dodge ball, or square dancing, or any of the other things that PE classes do?  Isn't the point of PE classes to expose kids to different ways of exercising and staying healthy?

I just think elementary school age is too young for them, if you want Yoga classes, make it an elective for the middle school/high school kids that aren't into team sports. Let the young children be children and play!

And hypnotherapy is "the devil's work".  Amy has helped so many people stop smoking, lose weight, overcome phobias...  But she still gets the occasional person who is interested and then has "a talk" with their preacher, pastor, spouse, whatever, and has to back out because it's "anti-Christian" and sometimes even "the devil's work".

... And for the record:  A sun salutation isn't worshipping the sun.  It's appreciating the sun in all its glorious energy splendor which is a creation and a gift... from GOD!

Sheesh!
