Hi all. I'm Brian, and I just started swimming about 1 1/2 months ago, and need to focus on my swimming in the next several months, since that is my weakest event. I'm doing 3 coached swims a week with the local tri-club.

Hi everyone! Welcome to the Grinches! (And if we stole Christmas, then we can steal the show in this challenge!!)

I always like getting to know everyone, so post a line or two about yourself - your name, your goals, your swim background, anything really.

My name is Gill and my goal for December is to swim for 5 hours. That means turning up to 5 tri-club swimming training sessions and working my butt off . I don't have a great swim background. I needed a lot of lessons before my first tri and I always assumed swimming would be my worst discipline (but it turns out running is ).

I took 18 months out (my avatar will tell you why) and I'm now working my way back to fitness. I've signed up for a sprint tri next June where the swim leg is 750m in the River Thames, so to say I'm slightly worried about that would be an understatement!

And if you haven't already noticed, I live in England, so while I will post as much as possible, I am 5-8 hours ahead of most of you! (Oh, and DD takes up a lot of time too...)

Hi! I am Grace; I'm a senior at the University of Maryland. I am training for Chesapeake Bay Swim in June- a 4.4 mile open water across the world's biggest estuary at its narrowest point. Gulp. I'm signed up for 30,000 yards and hopefully pool closures won't screw us all up!

Good luck everybody!

Hello fellow Grinches! I'm Alex.  I've done tris for 2 seasons now and swimming is by far my weakest point.   I'm usually MOP for bike and run, but BOBOP for the swim.  So maybe the tri gods were trying to tell me something this fall when I got an injury that has sidelined me from doing anything but swimming.

I was training for my first 1/2 mary this fall in Denver, when I got a femoral neck stress fracture.  I just finished  6 weeks on crutches with no weight bearing on my injured leg and now I've got a couple more weeks of partial weight bearing with crutches.  It's at least another month before I can get back on my bike and who knows how long before I can start running.  So off to the pool!

My goal for this month is 35,000 yards in the pool.

Hello fellow Grinches!

I am in for 8,000 yards this month and all the inspiration I can get. I have recently moved, and then the holidays hit and then I have been sick the last week, so training has really fallen. I did my first sprint in October and getting ready to start training for next season in which I plan to tackle an Olympic distance or two.

I am your typical slow fat triathlete who is hoping to move from back BOP to front BOP. I had a really hard time with the OWS portion of my first triathlon. I thought it was only because of the lake, but with the move and now a new pool that is actually deeper than four feet, I realize that a part of the problem is the depth of the water, not just the murky.  For that reason, I am hoping to do a good portion of this months yardage in the deep end so I can help get over that panicky feeling.

Good luck to everyone this month. Go Grinches!

Hi green Grinches,

I'm up for either 4 or 5 hours of swimming this month (I can't remember what I told Cat).   I've been a swimmer for most of my life, competitvely in HS and college.  During these winter months, I hope to just keep in the pool.  I tend to slack off in the water since that's my strongest sport (and unfortunately the shortest in the tri).

Other than that, my focus this month is going to be getting back into running.  And waiting for the snow to fly here in Tahoe.

What's up my Grinchin' friends?

I'm Brandon. This is my third season of tri's. I just learned how to swim less than 24 months ago, and those first months were largely a disaster.  I'm also sidelined with a knee injury, so the pool is my only friend right now.   I plan to make the pool sick and tired of seeing me as I try to crank out by far my biggest swimming month ever, with 37,000 yds.

I'm looking forward to seeing lots of success from everybody in this challenge!

Kazho - I had a really hard time with the OWS portion of my first triathlon.

That makes two of us - I got freaked out by the turbulent water (surprisingly, a rowing lake wasn't quite as still as the local pool...) and couldn't put my face in the water... I swam most of the 400m with my head up, doing a stroke that definitely resembled doggie paddle...

That makes 3 of us. I tried a tri last June and had to get "rescued" from the water before even hitting the first buoy on a 400m swim.

Since both of my daugters are hard-core swimmers, I'm having a hard time living that one down, which is why I'm doing swimming with my local tri-team.

bhoover10001 - 2007-12-03 2:57 PM That makes 3 of us..

Well, 4 of us.  My first OWS race (an aquathon: swim+run) I completely flipped out over having to put my face in the cold water.  Actually it was more the put it in take it out, put it in x 10,00 that was the problem.  So I did a poor imitation of breast stroke and side stroke for the whole 750 m while swearing that once I got back on land I'd never do this again, entry fees be damned!

That obviously didn't come true, but i still struggle with OWS.

I feel for all of you with OWS trouble. I have had a fear of water since being a wee thing. My first triathlon was only a 400 yard swim, but it felt like miles. I almost said screw it in the first ten seconds. I had a hard time putting my face in the water, and when I did, my instinct was to inhale and not exhale. I hyperventilated for a total of 17 minutes and was seeing stars by the end. Why do we do this again? Oh yea, we are nuts!

Good morning teammates.  Just got to the office to find out were I was placed. I am trying to find a way to convert snow shoveling time to swim distance but have not yet come across the right formula.

I love these challenges.  I was on the guys team back in 2005 for the first guys vs girls swim challange.  I had to wear the badge of disgrace.   That was the first and last time I had to change my avatar.  I hate  not winning.  There are so many teams and so little time to smack talk.

What is at stake this time. ? What do I have to try to explain to my wife this time.

 Mike
