I've been watching Lazymarathoners algea post today and thought thank God I swim in Wingra.  I had class there tonight and it was like bath water, weeds everywhere and even a little stinky at the shore.  Did what I needed to do and hightailed it out of there.   I saw Deanna's post, but I need an alternative for Thursday morning......anyone experience any of the beaches on Mendota lately? weeds? temps? or do I need to do a trek out to Lori's favorite Lake Ripley?

Thanks guys
Suzy

Ugh! I was hoping Wingra had stayed ungross so I could swim there on Friday! I'm going to try to go over and check out the conditions in Mendota tomorrow, I'm praying something will be swimmable by Friday. If not, Ripley it is. I have the day off and need to get in a decent swim!

Naw, I disagree. I just got back from a little night swimmin' there and it was fine. Actually it was kind of balmy like a bathtub, but the weeds are only a little bit worse than usual. There are just a bunch of spots where the weeds have grown to the surface, and yeah you should avoid those. They didn't used to be there. Besides those spots, the weeds are just the same as usual. A 3 minute swim from shore and you'll have no weeds at all, in fact.

We need to encourage more swimmers to go to Wingra because they'll inadvertently cut down the weeds with their arms. Lazymarathoner, go mow the lake for us.

And since you asked, I have some intel on Warner Beach on Mendota. Algae city. Not blue-green algae, but just nasty stuff that you pray doesn't get in your mouth. It might actually be goose poop. I haven't done a thorough analysis.

Bertgwen and I mowed the lake on Sunday! Is there algae? I thought the weeds were creepy but that's because I'm not a lake swimmer, but otherwise Wingra was ok. It did kind of smell. If there's no algae, I'll give it another try. I've had enough algae to last a lifetime.

Nope no algae that I noticed.

I will say this: the bugs are out of control. I was out of the water for about 5 minutes after my swim and I'm covered in mosquito/pterodactyl bites form head to toe. That's right, they bit my toe!

Lol, I got eaten alive during a 1-minute stop on the Capital City Trail tonight as well! It's good incentive to keep moving.

Last year Deanna and I did a couple swims right after work from James Madison park off Lake Mendota.  I don't know what it is like this year but I can walk over at lunch and take a look.  Maybe I should bring my swimsuit

3 minutes worth of weeds for you?  You must have a propeller on your rear end .  I'm doing a drive by Governor Nelson and check it out this afternoon and will post results.  It seems like Monona is pretty much out of the question.

Olbrich is still open. I haven't gone over there to check it out...but I have to walk the dog this morning so perhaps I'll walk him over there and report back.

I just got back from checking out Olbrich. It is officially NOT pea soup. Well, at least this morning. There was a guy picking out milfoil from the swimming area. When I swim there, I start right at the beach and head out past the swimming area and go back and forth. You don't want to go past the Creek outlet - that area gets kind of gross.

I'm debating between a swim and a run after I get back tonight.... Convince me one way or the other.

If I talk real nice to my hubby I may be able to run about 6:30ish for an hour or so tonight.
