Signed up for this one earlier this week, also living in Culpeper it makes sense.  Will be a bit more of a challenge than my first triathlon a few weeks ago... OWS vs. pool, longer swim, longer bike, and hillier run.  Good news is that I've had some decent swims, doing more long runs (8 miles) and my biking is ever improving.  Had hoped to get a nice bike ride in this evening, but it looks like old man weather might have something to say about that.  May go to the gym and spin for a while instead.  Anyone else looking forward to this one?

Yep, this was my first OWS last year, lol looking to improve on my 28 minute 750M time from last year.

Bike is rolling, run I recall was rather hilly.

Cool, looks like we're in the same age group.  I have no idea how I will do in the OWS, but if I can relax, breath and pace myself correctly I should be fine.  Bike and run are hilly... rode last years bike course the other day.

Should be a great day. I have a handful of friends that are also participating which will make it fun. I did the Little Pepper race last April and am hoping to be able to see some improvement, although wetsuits were allowed for that one, making the swim pretty quick.

Xeon - I'm not going to get there till the morning of the race and won't have a chance to see the bike loop - have you? I recall a few areas of sustained stairstep-type hills, but the course is different now and I just don't see severe climbs when I look at the elevation data from mapmyride. I do see some moderate uphills around mile 4 - 7, otherwise a pretty flat ride after that. Am I missing something? Any insight/tips would be awesome.

Just had a baby, so I won't be racing this race, but I did it last year. It was my second race ever and a great event. The area is so nice and shady. The bike was fairly up and down, with rolling hills. Out of T1, there is a killer hill which you gotta be ready for. If you aren't spent after that hill, the rest should be fine. Just make sure you are in an easy gear and it won't kill you. I fought to clip in, first race clipless and by the time I got in, I was struggle to chain my gears because I was mashing so hard up the hill. The run is very nice, slight uphill out and slight downhill back. If I remember it was almost all shaded and the run starts on the nice soft grassy ground.

Tough to say since it looks like they've changed the course a few times.  I have two race maps, both use slightly different routes and go in different directions.  I'm not ever sure I know what to expect since I do not ride those roads that much.  On last years route, I thought it had moderate hills throughout until you hit 522 and then you have a slight incline to the turn onto Nelson... one big downhill (40+ if you push it) and then one more uphill before turning into Mountain Run Lake road that is a pretty flat run back to the lake.

Last year's Culpeper was my first-ever tri, so it has a special place in my heart :-)Moderate hills. There a some some sharp turns to be mindful of. Last year the wife told me she saw the leading female racer wipe out at the last turn before the dismount line. Enjoy the ride -- see if you can spot the buffalo along the course!

The race paperwork came out and it looks like it is the same bike course I rode the other day.  Course is challenging I suppose if hills arent' your thing, otherwise my impression is most if not all of the hills have enough flat stretches in between that you can recover if your HR gets in the max zone.  That's a subjective thing though.  Sorry I can't be any more descriptive of the course, I sort of know the course, but not well enough to give a turn by turn, hill to hill analysis.

Glad I rode it then because my week is about shot anyway... found out that I'm working the Kid Rock/Lynryd Skynyd concert on Saturday.  Did an 8 mile run yesterday morning and then a 34 mile ride in the evening, otherwise I think I'm shutting it down for the week.  May take my motorcyle on the course today or tomorrow if I get the time.  So I will be picking up my race packet on Saturday and heading to Nissan for the concert.  Nothing like getting a good nights sleep before an event. <--- sarcasm
