Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm doing my first sprint tri next month, and I'm trying to figure out what to wear that will work, but will not break the bank. (especially since it's my first one, and if I don't like it, I don't want to have a ton of gear to figure out what to do with.) I'm a strong swimmer and the water will be warm next month, so no wetsuit for me. I bought a workout bikini suit (figuring I can wear that for the whole thing), then I was planning on pulling on my long fitted running shorts for the bike and run part, along with a regular running shirt after the swim. I'm also just planning on wearing my running shoes for the bike and run part. Can I do that? Is there anything else that I NEED or should do differently? I've read some posts on here about tri-shorts, but I don't know exactly what those are? Do you wear them over bottoms when you swim, or are they the bottoms that stay on for the whole race? I'd love to have your suggestions. I'm not opposed to buying different clothing, if I can find good prices. Thanks! Jen |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just did my first Tri in copression shorts and a Walmart sports bra top which I wore through the whole event. Worked fine. (especially since it's my first one, and if I don't like it, I don't want to have a ton of gear to figure out what to do with.) And as for this..... when is your first Tri? I simply have to check back with you and see if you are hooked. This is addictive, and my guess is you will be back!!! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm doing my first in Oct. I too am on a budget and plan on wearing my bathing suit with a pair of shorts overtop. Not perfect, but I just invested in a pool membership, hundred dollar sneakers and a competitive swimsuit for practice. That in addition to a new roadbike last year! A little at a time for me...I figure the most uncomfortable time will be on the bike and it should be under an hour. I'll deal with it. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Honestly - I'd do what you're planning - although I you could even forgo the shorts and shirt. I've done entire races in my bathing suit. Tri shorts are like bike shorts with a thin fast-drying chamois. You wear them like bike shorts with nothing underneath. Yup - you wear them for the whole race. I wouldn't bother for anything other than OLY or HIM. I personally don't need the padding for shorter races - but it is definitely more comfortable than nothing at all. I bought tri shorts this year for my HIM - but I didn't race my sprint in them - I just wore my bathing suit with my running shorts over (inside my wetsuit). |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you've tried running in your swimsuit and you're OK with that, you can do the whole race just as you described. (You might also try a ride to make sure the different posture doesn't pull things in ways you don't like. ) Most sprints don't have places to change, so you need to plan to wear whatever you swim in for the whole time. Doesn't mean you can't add to it though. It can take some work to pull shorts or a t-shirt on over your wet skin/suit, but if you take your time to begin, it isn't too bad (no more than 20-30 seconds). If you rush and get the clothes bunched up and "caught" it can take a lot longer. For my first tri, I swam in swim trunks and put on an old, baggy, cotton t-shirt, socks, and running shoes in T1 before heading out on my mountain bike. I had a lot of fun. One tip for the socks, put them on and roll them half-way off your foot before the race. In T1 (or T2), put the half-rolled sock over your toes and roll it back up over your heel. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good suggestions, and thanks! I think I'm on the right track for the first one. The tri is Sept 12 -1/4 mile swim, 14 mile bike (the part I'm the most nervous about), and 3 mile run. I have a mountain bike, and am going tomorrow to get slicks on it to get ready. I hope it makes a difference. I have a few long rides scheduled, but haven't actually done the complete ride yet. I still have just a month, so I'm a little nervous. I'll feel better once I"ve done the distance and have a relative time. Thanks again! Jen |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You should be fine. I was like you and didn't want to invest too much initially. I did my first one last weekend wearing a swim suit for the swim, threw on a simple pair of mesh shorts at T1 (only took a few seconds), jammed my running shoes on my feet (elastic laces - get them, they are totally worth the $7), and took off on the bike. For T2 I just removed helmet, racked bike, and grabbed my race belt - again, worth the $7. As others have said, just make sure to train at least once in the outfit you're planning to wear in the tri to make sure it supports you appropriately. I seriously considered wearing socks and a shirt for the run but in the end I decided not to and was glad because they were unnecessary. Edited by happyshoes 2009-08-15 11:19 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A pair of tri shorts can be found on line or clearance racks for under $20 and will eliminate need for putting on the additional shorts and make your ride more comfortable. You wear them instead of your bikini bottom. You can use the top from the set you got. (I am wearing LG shorts for $10 in my profile pic) SKIP THE SHIRT - it will just slow you down. Some tri's do not require race number to be worn in the run anymore. If you need to wear a number in the run see if you can borrow a number belt. (you can buy one for $5-$8.) If you can't get a number belt and need to wear a number - practice pulling on your shirt with pinned paper on it while you are wet. You need goggles, shorts, sports top you can swim in, running shoes you can bike in with toe clips ($6 at Target), Helmet, Bike -whatever you have already is fine but if it is a Mt Bike with knobby tires - swap them for slicks ($10 performancebike.com / $12 Target) a number belt or technical shirt (free at most 5k races or $10 at walmart) if race number need be worn optional:A hand towell to wipe you feet on at transitions, glasses, socks, water bottle and cage |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just wear your swim suit for the whole race and pick up/or make a cheap race belt for your number. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() To echo some of the earlier posts. Whatever you decide, try putting it on when you're wet. Putting on clothes on when you're wet can be difficult. Here's a link to some low cost tri shorts. I've used these shorts for all my races and some 6+ hour rides and never had any problems. Very comfortable. http://www.aevero.com/xcart/home.php?cat=1 Plus you'll get a free hat. Ernie |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You can search some of the major tri shops for end of year closeouts (trisports.com, gotrisports.com, all3sports.com, etc) or just buy a cheap pair of tri shorts from aevero.com or on ebay. Actually, you can find a lot of good deals on ebay. At a minimum, I'd get toe thingies for your pedals and a pair of tri shorts. You can probably do a sprint in a pair of spandex, but they show much more. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I found a decent pair of Nike swimtrunks that are very similar to tri shorts (nice and tighty), just less durable - for $11 at Duhnam's. Biking and running in them are fine. I am running my first tri in them and nothing else but running shoes. Hopefully there not too cheap and the crotch doesn't rip during the bike - perhpas I should have a pair of shorts handy at T2 just to be safe.. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For a sprint, I'd say just do the whole thing in your swim suit. (I mean, add shoes and a bike helmet, but other than that...) |
