Okay...so this will be my first tri-attempt this Sunday at the All women's Danskin Sprint Tri in Webster, MA. I am SO NERVOUS and feel that I may not make it through the 1/2 mile swim!! I am a strong runner and have always been successful in my road races and thought I'd try something new...now that it's here I am feeling very nervous. Swim has been my weakest...and I fear I really haven't knacked my breathing or strokes...has any one else ever felt thsi way and if so...did you make it? And also any suggestions for me??? I really could use the support!!

Thanks...and oh my name is Kate. I'm from NH and am 27....thanks for any feedback!!!

Hi Kate,

Welcome to BT.  I don't think you will have a problem with your swim.  I am not a swimmer either, and I have done one sprint and one Olympic tri so far.  I did most of the Olympic swim going breast stroke, and also stopped a few times to hold onto the lifeguard kayak.  On the sprint the water was shallow enough that I could stand in the mud for the last .25 of the swim and half walk the rest of it.  I also believe that Danskin offers "swim angles," someone to swim with you to help give you the encouragements to get though the swim, and is with you incase of a problem and can get you help should it be needed.  With all this, there is no reason to be nervous, you can do it.  I also know that this is easier said then done.  Good luck, you will do great.

Dirk

Hi Kate,

Welcome to the site and the sport!

I'm no swimmer either, nor a good runner (Hey! I'm not even that good on the bike-what gives!?!?!) but I'm doing my 3rd sprint tonight.

Some suggestions:
- Start at the back of the pack
- Start at the side of the pack
- Take your time
- Roll on your back and rest if you need to
- Don't worry, you'll be fine

And, I'll even bet you won't be the last out of the water, not that it should matter to you or anyone else!

Do it! Have fun! Post your report!

Cheers,
Rob

Hey Kate!
I am similar to you...Distance running is my strength and I am a decent cyclist...But the swim?? Oye! Well, I did my first sprint two wks ago. Wetsuits were allowed (barely...the water was 76.5*) I was one of the last out of the water but I had a grand time passing people on the bike and the run. I was SHOCKED to discover that I had won my AG! I am telling you this because what worked for me was to stay calm in the water, accept the fact that at this point I am a SLOW swimmer, and then just hammer the next two legs.
That said, I am competing in my first Oly this Sunday and wetsuits are NOT allowed. I am very nervous about the .9 mile swim. I hope to apply the same philosophy as I did in the sprint. '
GOOD LUCK and be sure to post a race report!

If you can, please read the post I made to Kate. Reading your post was encouraging for me! Were you able to wear a wetsuit in your Oly? That would make a big difference in my stress level, but I already know that they won't be allowed. The water was 78* last week.
Please let me know...Thanks!

My two races were the opposite, in the sprint in a lake in South Jersey, there were no wet suites allowed, how ever for the Olympic two weeks later I was able to wear a wet suite in the Schuylkill River.  However as you said in your post to Kate, just take your time and not worry about the swim time, you can try to make up the time on the bike and run legs.  If you take a look at my race reports you will see that I was near the bottom in all parts of the race, so winning my AG is not going to happen, but I had fun anyway.  Congrats on your AG win in your sprint and good luck with your Olympic.  Which race are you doing this weekend?

THANK YOU all for your kind words and suggestions!! I am quite the competitor when my adrenaline starts going, but I do need reassurance from athletes who have experienced the same. Dirk- you are correct, the Danskin tri does provide "swim angels" which is a plus and I will use them should I panic Thanks again and I appreciate all thoughts and feedback! I will report in next Tues on my results!

Good luck to all!!

Thanks! My son and I just did the Musselman (Geneva, NY). That was my first sprint and my son's first Half IM. He had an awesome race and finished 10th overall! Yep, I am the proud mom! lol
This wkend we are traveling to Charlottesville, VA for the Charlottesville International Triathlon. It caps at 300 competitors and should be a lot of fun! It will be challenging, especially for a first Oly. No wetsuits, hilly bike course and 10k trail run (single track mountain bike trail for the run).
Wild!
Again, thanks for your advice Dirk!
Oh, and did you do the Phila. Oly in June? My son competed there too. He thought it was a very well organized event...

You are going to RAWK!!! Remember, stay calm through the swim and T-1 and then unleash that inner wild child on the bike and run! Go get 'em, girl!

Yup, that is the Olympic I did.  I did it with Team in Training.  I was 1000 out of the 1003 individual finishers.  I thought it was well organized too, but then I didn't have much to compare it too.  I just was not sure about swimming in the river; I grew up around here, and still remember all the dead fish floating in the river from years ago when it wasn't safe to swim in.  Good luck in your Olympic in VA, if you were going closer I was thinking of trying to stop by and cheer you on.

Hi Kate!
I did my first tri last weekend and had the same concerns as you. I resigned myself to poking through the swim 'cause hey, what else could I do? I had trained as much as I could at that point so what the heck? I just focused on staying calm, did whatever stroke I had to (lots of backstroke), even joked around with my counter (it was a pool swim) -- seriously even the lady keeping time was laughing with us. Downright silly, acutally. I was for sure the only one in that pool who had a smile on her face!
At the end, to my complete astonishment, I finnished 3 min faster than I'd ever done it. Go figure.
Someone on this board re-assured me to "trust your training" - I thought that was good advice. You will totally be fine!
Have a great time!
Frances

We've got a big thread going in the "who's racing" forum about the Danskin-Webster race.  I did a review of the bike course there, and we're trying to figure out how to hook up.
